Helping the straight-six achieve that output is a hybrid-assist system using a 48-volt primary electrical system called EQ Boost. An electric compressor and a combination starter/alternator serve up an extra 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. In essence, EQ Boost is similar to Audi’s hybrid-assist system in the 2019 A8, but instead of a starter/alternator driven off an engine belt, Mercedes uses an electric motor mounted between the engine and the nine-speed automatic. The starter/alternator powers the electric supercharger to peak boost in milliseconds, minimizing lag before the standard turbo awakes.

The inline-six has a couple more interesting features. Since the 12-volt battery is a secondary system wired to the 48-volt battery, which in turn is recharged by the starter/alternator, Mercedes deleted the auxiliary belt on the engine’s front side. Filling the space is an exhaust aftertreatment system so the catalytic converters can warm up as quickly as possible, a setup Mercedes introduced on its new family of diesel inline-fours; there’s also a particulate filter (yes, for a gasoline engine) located just downstream.

The E53’s 4Matic+ badge denotes the standard AMG-tuned all-wheel-drive system that can route torque entirely to the rear wheels. Mercedes also reinforced both axles, revised the steering knuckles, and dialed in more negative camber. An adaptive air-spring suspension, AMG Ride Control+, comes standard. Mercedes estimates a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.3 seconds for the E53 coupe and 4.4 seconds for the convertible. Top speed is limited to 130 mph.

The E53 adds an aggressive body kit, four chrome exhaust tips, and a double-bar front grille lifted from the E63. Additional side sills, two chrome fins spanning the lower front air intakes, and a restyled bumper with a venturi-style splitter complete the look.

Inside, red leather inserts on the seats and door armrests, red dash stitching, and a microsuede-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel with a 12 o’clock hash mark are all available, while carbon-fiber trim and red seatbelts come standard. We’re more fond of the black-and-saddle-brown combo shown in the E53 convertible. Otherwise, it’s a regular E-class interior, which isn’t exactly a conventional or boring place to sit. The E53’s voice control now can operate the head-up display, the interior lights, climate control, and the seat heating and ventilation. Semi-automated driver assists upgrade to the versions in the latest S-class, with promised improvements to Active Steering Assist and Active Lane Changing Assist.

We’ll know pricing and availability later this year. The Mercedes-AMG E53’s intriguing new powertrain promises to make an already appealing coupe and convertible even more so.
