  Stick, Beaten: BMW Looks to an (Almost) Manual-Free Future <p>The decline of the manual gearbox often feels like a drawn-out but doomed military campaign.</p>“Across the world, virtually all of our 3-series [models] and above already have automatic transmissions,” Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales and marketing, told us when we sat down with him at the Geneva auto show. “China never had any manual transmissions; they went straight to auto. The U.S. is predominantly auto, and more and more of Europe is as well. We will certainly see fewer and fewer manual transmissions being offered.

The Association of German Vehicle Tuners (VDAT) launches a special concept car every year under this initiative, which is supported by the Police and the Federal Carscoops’ handy guide to all the world and North American premieres set to appear on the floors of the 2017 New York Auto Show .

The primary occupants of the ground floor of the Javits Center during the 2017 New York auto show are trucks, SUVs, and Buick. However, they share the space with some wild tuners (anchored by aRays Wheels display), assorted classics, and even a backhoe. There are a few funky automaker truck and SUV creations down here as well.

If you're planning on attending the public days of the show, make sure to stop by and take a look once you're done dreaming of (not) drag-racing the NHRA-banned Dodge Challenger Demon, going skiing in a 2018 Buick Regal TourX, or being cosseted in a 2018 Lincoln Navigator. It's worth the time and should make for good social media fodder.
