Honda Civic Type R Will Debut in Production Form in Geneva

Honda Civic Type R Will Debut in Production Form in Geneva We’ve seen enough prototypes, so now it’s time for Honda to reveal its most anticipated new car in quite a while. The Honda Civic Type R will debut in production form at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We don’t expect the final production model to look much different from the prototypes we’ve seen recently. The Civic Type R will feature a version of Honda's latest 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine, but we don't know how much power it will make. The outgoing Type R produced 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Production of the new Type R will begin this summer at Honda's manufacturing facility in Swindon, U.K. Honda has already confirmed the Type R will make it to the U.S. for the first time.

After its official world debut at the 2017 Geneva auto show, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R has started making its auto show rounds in North America with an appearance at the 2017 New York auto show.

The 2017 Ford Focus RS starts at $36,995 and the 2017 Subaru WRX STI goes for $36,015, although the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is a bit more expensive at $40,195. Granted, all of those cars drive all four wheels instead of just the fronts like the Type R.

The car that made its debut in Geneva was finished in an eye-catching shade of pull-me-over red, which gave it an aggressive look. Although it's difficult to tell in the harsh auto show lighting, Honda confirmed to us that this Type R is painted in the brand's storied Championship White color. That paint code has appeared on such celebrated high-performance Japanese-market Honda models as the EK9 Civic Type R and NSX Type R, but we haven't seen it on these shores since the Acura Integra Type R left production in 2001.

Powering the 2017 Civic Type R is a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. If this sounds familiar, that's because it's the same unit used in the outgoing ninth-generation model that was exclusive to the European market. A six-speed manual with an automatic rev-matching feature that can be turned off is the only transmission available. Adjustable suspension with a Dual Axis front setup, aluminum lower arms, and steering knuckles comes standard with three-chamber dampers. It also has 20-inch alloy wheels shod in Continental ContiSportContact 6 performance tires. The Type R comes standard with an adaptive steering system, Brembo brakes, a helical limited-slip differential, and a full aero kit complete with a gigantic rear wing.

Production-Spec Honda Civic Type R Spotted on California Highway

Production-Spec Honda Civic Type R Spotted on California Highway
Honda's 306-horsepower hot hatch has reached American shores at long last.
The YouTube video, time-stamped to April 9th and posted to Reddit's /r/cars on Monday morning, shows a black, apparently-production-spec Civic Type R wearing manufacturer license plates. As the video starts, the car is caught idling in a parking lot next to a two-lane road; moments later, it pulls onto the road and zips away, the driver throwing a brief bit of unspoken shade at the cameraman before disappearing with a departure that shows off the car's 295 pound-feet of torque more than the raspy rev of the turbocharged VTEC near the top end.

Honda expects the 2017 Civic Type R to start in the mid-$30,000 range with the same level of equipment as the range-topping Touring trim featured inrun-of-the-mill Civics. Standard features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a 540-watt premium audio system, sport seats with more aggressive bolsters, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift gate. The Civic Type R will slot above the recently revealed Civic Si in the performance hierarchy.
