2018 Volkswagen Tiguan: 2.0 TSI Engine Gets Modified Miller Cycle, More Torque and MPG

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan: 2.0 TSI Engine Gets Modified Miller Cycle, More Torque and MPG Volkswagen will update its 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine for use in the 2018 Tiguan compact SUV, giving it a modified version of the Miller combustion cycle. The Gen3B’s most significant change is a modified Miller combustion cycle, unique to Volkswagen. In a conventional Miller-cycle engine, the intake valves close just before the end of the piston’s intake stroke, but Volkswagen’s modified cycle (call it Budack) closes the intake valves much earlier. The company says this results in more effective combustion and faster airflow for incoming gases. The Budack cycle provides lower fuel consumption and more torque than the pre-update EA888 found in the 2017 Tiguan.

Volkswagen’s certified pre-owned program is known as WorldAuto, so don’t be surprised when that name pops up while you’re shopping for a CPO Volkswagen Beetle convertible this summer. Other than having a different name, WorldAuto is very similar to other certified pre-owned programs out there. Buying a CPO VW lets you get into a late-model Volkswagen that has been manufacturer inspected and carries a manufacturer warranty. Basically, you get many of the benefits of buying a new car at a much lower price.

Inspection Process

Volkswagen uses a 112-point inspection process, which is on the lower end, even among non-luxury brands. The dealership starts by checking the CARFAX report and making sure there’s no structural or flood damage. Any vehicles with that kind of serious damage are eliminated from the CPO program immediately.

Once the car has passed the basic requirements, it will be road-tested and inspected – inside, outside, and under the hood. Anything that doesn’t meet Volkswagen’s standards will be repaired before offering it as a CPO vehicle.

Warranty

WorldAuto includes a 2-year/24,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty with every pre-owned vehicle. It covers more than the typical powertrain warranty, including steering, heating, air conditioning, and the ABS system, with a $50 deductible for any work done at the dealership while the car is covered.

Extras

Every CPO Volkswagen comes with a three-month trial of Sirius XM satellite radio. If you want to make your Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen (pictured above) even sportier, you can add Volkswagen accessories at the dealership, just like you would with a brand-new vehicle.

You can also opt to add up to 100,000 miles of extra warranty coverage, depending on the age and mileage of the pre-owned vehicle you purchase. There are five plans to choose from, and in some cases you can roll the extra cost into your financing, so it’s included in your monthly payment.

How Does It Compare to Rivals?

Volkswagen’s – or WorldAuto’s – warranty is shorter than average, but it’s more comprehensive than the usual powertrain warranty. It’s up to you if more coverage for a shorter period of time is a good fit for the way you use your used car. Bear in mind that the average American drives more than 13,000 miles a year, so if your commute is long or your work requires road trips, this warranty many run out pretty quickly.

Other manufacturers do offer much longer-term warranties, even if they are less comprehensive. Kia, for example, offers a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, but its Platinum Coverage only lasts one year (or 12,000 miles, which many drivers will pass within a year). Honda has a typical 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 1-year/12,000-mile non-powertrain warranty. These manufacturers also offer a more thorough inspection than Volkswagen does.

So no matter how many times the vehicle changes hands in those six years, the warranty goes with it. Just as it does for Atlas and Tiguan, the warranty covers all powertrain and drivetrain components, including the engine, transmission, and 4Motion all-wheel drive system, when equipped. The new warranty replaces the 3-year/36,000-mile powertrain warranty Volkswagen previously offered.
