Magical Thinking: Infiniti Teases Retro Barn-Find Concept

Magical Thinking: Infiniti Teases Retro Barn-Find Concept
“What if we found a car, down at the southern tip of Japan, buried deep in a barn, hidden from all eyes for 70 years?”
We’ll find out next week at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance during the annual pilgrimage to Monterey. The lone photo of the Infiniti concept shows a section of what appears to be a silver racing car (odd, since Japan’s national racing color is white), perhaps intended to look like a monoposto GP design or perhaps some sort of early sports-racer.

Danny lives in Bridgeport, New York, close to Syracuse. His major interest is Mopar muscle cars, which he likes to buy, sell, and restore. He is always looking for the ultimate find.

"Whenever I sell one car I like to invest in another car."

After a recent sale, Danny made a bold move. He walked into the local lumber yard and "flopped" $7,000 on the counter. He says, "I am a carpenter, and I go in there sometimes five times a week. I probably caught him on a good day."

He was referring to his buddy, who works in the lumber yard. "I laid the money right on the table and he said, 'Yeah, I'll do it.'"

But a 1971 Super Bee purchased for $7,000 25 years ago should be worth more than $7,000 today, correct?

"Yeah, but money talks and bulls--t walks," Danny says.

That other car, however, is a street machine that came from the factory with a 318, which is the very reason Danny had advised his buddy 25 years ago to buy the 1971 Super Bee.

The idea that some beautiful or rare car can simply be locked away and forgotten about seems unthinkable to many enthusiasts. One of the most notable finds in recent memory was the sole road-going aluminum-bodied 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona in existence. The car just sold for about $2.2 million at an RM Sotheby's auction this past weekend.

"I said, if you want a collector car in the future, in my book this '71 is much better than your '74. It's something that's rare."

His buddy bought the Bee, but gravitated back to his 1974 model. The local Mopar guru in town built a 440 and installed a 4.10 Dana. Finally, Danny made a push to buy the earlier Super Bee. His old 1971 Super Bee was long gone.

"I told him that if he ever wanted the $7,000 back I always got it. I'll buy it back from you. I am the one that originally found the car. He knew it was rare. A 383 with a Pistol Grip? They only made 766 of them."

Pushing a decision was the storage garage, which was "about to fall down." So that day when Danny walked into the lumber yard he had more than buying lumber in mind. He also had a pocket full of cash.

"He had hemmed and hawed about it through the years, but we never struck a deal until I laid that money down on the counter."

The Super Bee wasn't all that much different from the way it was 25 years ago. The car is "numbers-matching all the way," and "needs quarters and a couple patches here and there."

Danny got a Super deal on a 1971 383 Dodge that was meant to Bee from 25 years ago.
