Watch This 4,000-HP Corvette Dragster Take Flight and Crash Drag racing's emphasis on maximum acceleration and straight line speed above all else means the sport occasionally leads to some visually impressive crashes. The sheer amount of power being pushed through the back wheels of the vehicles-especially funny cars, which lack the manic downforce of Top Fuel dragsters-mean it's often easy for drag racing cars to pop wheelies that would make Vin Diesel's Charger jealous. And if a car's nose climbs too high and enough air pressure gathers beneath its undercarriage, the whole dragster can Research Research New Used New & Used Make (e.g. Chevrolet) Model (e.g.

The 10-Speed Chevy Camaro ZL1 Shifts Into Eighth Gear at 180 MPH On a full-throttle run to 180 mph, the Camaro ZL1 upshifts seven times—and it's still accelerating in eighth gear.Hennessey Performance lined up its fully stock 10-speed equipped Camaro ZL1 for a 0-180 mph run to extract some straight-line data. During the pull, Hennessey was able to achieve a 3.6-second 0-60 time, a 7.6-second 0-100 time, and a 26.2-second 0-180 time-all despite a seemingly soft launch.

Test day was a scorcher—summer in Florida is never ideal for hero runs—but Bradenton officials provided a great track. Nitto NT05 315/35/20-inch drag radials with tire pressures set to 21 psi further upped the traction ante.

The first run was made with a 2,000-rpm launch, and the result was a nasty B-O-G and an e.t. of 11.83 at 121 mph. Lingenfelter's engineers connected the laptop and checked out the data. They asked for shifts at 6,800 rpm and 3,000 rpm launch for the next hit. The change resulted in an e.t. improvement to 11.74. A 4,000-rpm launch netted a lower-still 11.58 e.t. at 124.18 mph. For the last run, launch rpm was lowered, and instead the clutch was slipped to maintain engine speed. The technique worked and e.t. improved to a best-of-day 11.35 at 124.89 mph.

Spied! Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is too Loud for the ‘Ring
Unknown engine needs extra help to keep noise dow
Many race tracks have noise ordinances in place that restrict how loud you can be at certain times. According to our shooter, the day this prototype was caught there was a 100-decibel limit in effect. The ZR1 apparently couldn't meet that, as extra piping was added to the tailpipes a trick used by racers to reduce noise on noise-restricted track days. Each of the test mule's four bazooka-sized exhaust tips is fitted with a pipe angled at 90 degrees, with the outer tips getting longer pipes.

Cooler weather would have netted even better e.t.'s, but the Camaro was simply amazing. Its look is aggressive and it has a wicked exhaust note. The Tremec six-speed is silky smooth, whether power-shifting or gliding the trans through the gears at a pedestrian pace.

The Vette carries Lingenfelter Signature Edition Corvette Z06 serial No. 001 and has a 6.2L supercharged LT4 V8 making 800 hp at its heart. Funneling power to the tires is Chevy's quick-shifting, eight-speed automatic transmission and 3.42:1 limited-slip differential. This makes the Vette easy to drive on the street or track. In fact, to get the best e.t., simply do a quick burnout, stage, and let 'er rip. Believe it or not, it's that easy to rocket yourself to mid-10s at 130 mph!

For the track test, we fitted the Vette with the same 315 Nittos as the Camaro and the LPE guys cut us loose on track. A short burnout got the tires cleaned, warmed, and ready, and the car was ready to stage.

Launching the Vette is easy: power break to 1,200 rpm, and when the bulbs drop, trade both feet as fast as possible. The LPE Z06 digs in and within 30 feet the engine is on boost and screaming toward redline. Shifts are crisp—and there are a lot of them—as the Vette has eight forward speeds. The Corvette cut through the sticky, warm Florida air and produced a best e.t. of 10.78 at 130 mph. While the fun factor pegged the needle, this car would easily be in the mid- to low-10s in better weather conditions. Nevertheless, it's a solid 10-second performer.

1967 Rally Sport Camaro

The 2017 ZL1 sweepstakes is paired with a 1967 Rally Sport Camaro fashioned in Tuxedo Black with a black interior. In contrast to the new LT Chevy mill, the first-gen Chevy is motivated by a 396-inch big-block making 400+ hp. This '67 is optioned with a factory Rally Sport package, including those gorgeous hideaway headlamps, and it's upgraded with a Tremec five-speed, power steering, and power brakes. Performance upgrades include Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes, QA1 shocks and front coil springs, Billet Specialties suspension, TMI Performance Sport interior, Electric hideaway headlamps, LED taillamps, and the engine is decked out with polished aluminum and billet everywhere. It rides on 18s and you won't sweat thanks to the Vintage Air climate system.

1963 Sting Ray

The pair to the modern Z06 is 1963 split-window Sting Ray, one of the most desirable Vettes in history. The '63 is painted in Riverside Red and sports a fuel-injected, L84, 327ci V8 with an M20 four-speed transmission and P48 cast knock-off wheels. This Vette is believed to be one of only 2,610 original factory "fuelies" built in 1963, and it's restored to strict National Corvette Restorer's Society (NCRS) standards. In addition, it was awarded the coveted NCRS Top Flight award.

1969 Camaro being built for performance! .
Classic Chevys are more loved for their classic lines than for their dated suspensions or even their cool sounding, but by today’s standards, power-lacking drivetrains. It all started with a stalled project Tim found local to him in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The 1969 Camaro had been undergoing a complete restoration when the project ground to a halt. Since it was missing a drivetrain, something he would have discarded anyways, it was perfect for what he had in mind. Before work stopped on the Camaro it had been body worked straight and shot in Aztec Gold period-correct paint. Tim dug the retro color, feeling it would add to the Camaro's sleeper status.
