Spied! 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Winter Testing

Spied! 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Winter Testing Dual-Exit Exhaust, LED Lighting Among Exterior DetailsLate last month, we brought you spyshots of what is believed to be the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 testing. The wrapping and cladding was designed to give the onlooker the impression that the truck was a Ford F-150. The beltline cut-down on the camouflage wrap is a signature feature of the F-Series. However, close proximity to General Motors facilities and other vehicles leads us to believe we’re looking at the next-generation Silverado. Here, we see the truck winter testing.

Spotted testing recently in Los Angeles was the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado 1500, likely due for the 2019 model year. The redesigned pickup will probably undergo several changes compared to the current truck, including a probable switch to aluminum bodywork, a la the 2015 F-150. We recently spotted the same (or a similar) truck near our El Segundo offices, though we suspected it was a GMC at the time.

SPIED: Ram 1500 Mule Spotted with Four-Cylinder Engine? Spied this weekend was something that has us scratching our heads: a Ram 1500 mule with an inline four-cylinder engine. What are Ram engineers cooking up? Could this be another downsized, light-duty turbodiesel engine, or is Ram using the 1/2-ton mule to test the powertrain of a midsize pickup to compete with the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado?© Truck Trend Network Staff Ram 1500 Inline Four 03 The closeups are grainy at best, but they still leave no question as to the configuration of the engine, with its cylinders in a line.

Obviously, it’s difficult to decipher much from the heavily camouflaged truck, but we do recognize GM’s signature square wheel wells, a bold center grille bar with a bowtie logo, and extensive use of LED lighting front and rear. Door-mounted mirrors are an unusual addition to the Silverado lineup, but the stepped beltline is probably a trick of the camouflage; expect a traditional side profile from the 1500. This example also sports dark silver wheels with an attractive design, leading us to believe it’s likely a Silverado High Country.

Other than what we can barely make out from the photos, we don’t know much about the 2019 Silverado. We presume it will be available with a lineup of V-6 and V-8 engines, including a possible 3.0L twin-turbo V-6 and a 4.5L turbodiesel V-8 (we hope). The 10-speed automatic transmission jointly designed by GM and Ford will also appear in the Silverado 1500, standard on higher-spec trucks and optional on base models. And with a switch to aluminum bodywork, expect the 2019 Chevy to weigh 600-plus pounds less than the outgoing model.

GM’s Next-Gen Hauler Warming Up for its Big DebutThe other giveaway was the rectangular dual exhaust tips, another feature we noted on past spyshots of GM’s new 1/2-tons. What we know for sure so far is that the new trucks will have a leaf-spring rear suspension and a 10-speed automatic, at least on the higher trim levels. GM’s 8L90E eight-speed automatic will likely serve as the base transmission on lower-trim models, at least initially.

2019 Silverado and Sierra 1500 Testing in Colorado! .
Different Exhaust Tip Design Shows Different Trim, Possible DieselOne interesting change noted on this particular group of mules compared to previous spy shots is the exhaust tips. Most of the models we’ve seen up until this point have had rectangular dual rear outlets. These tips are round. We did not get close enough to see if they were Venturi tips or not, which would indicate a diesel engine. Considering how aggressively GM is promoting diesels in its other models—such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Cruze, and Equinox, as well as the GMC Terrain—we feel the likelihood of a V-6 diesel in the next-gen Silverado and Sierra 1500 is practically a given.
