  Ed Carpenter fastest on 3rd day of Indy 500 practice Ed Carpenter turned the fastest lap by hitting 222.894 mph on the third day of Indianapolis 500 practice Wednesday. Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 winner and fastest Honda driver, was second at 222.599. JR Hildebrand was third at 220.553.Carpenter and Hildebrand both drive Chevrolet-powered car.Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso was fourth at 219.533.Speeds were down for the second straight day and were the lowest since Marco Andretti hit 226 on Monday. Warm and windy conditions limited the number of laps and time spent on the track as teams prepare for qualifying this weekend for the May 28 race.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Jim McElreath, a teenage dirt-track racer who went on to become the 1962 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year and race in 15 Indy 500s, has died. He was age 89.

Separate statements issued by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway say McElreath died Thursday in his sleep at his home in Arlington, Texas.

McElreath had been one of eight surviving drivers who had driven a front-engine car in the Indy 500, where rear-mounted engines are now standard. He finished sixth or higher in the 500 six times, finishing as high as third in the 1966 race.

McElreath retired from competition in 1984 and has been inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

Why Are There 1970-1/2 Camaros? .
You may have noticed that some 1970 Camaros are designated 1970-1/2. Things had been right on schedule for the all-new Camaro body stampings at Fisher Body, when during what is called "final die tryouts" right before production stamping begins, the quarter-panels kept wrinkling and splitting. The body dies required too much draw for the sheetmetal to cooperate. Fisher decided to reconfigure the draw dies, which are the two halves needed to pound out a fender or panel from flat sheet stock. This required a short delay. Unfortunately, the resulting quarter-panels stamped from the new dies were worse than the previous attempt.
