BMW Concept Z4 Hits the Lawn at Pebble Beach
Shares stage with Concept 8 Series
The 8 Series concept previews of course the next 8 series as well as the next BMW "form language," says Group design director Adrian van Hooydonk. The new language is cleaner and sharper with fewer lines. The new style is not a total rejection of Chris Bangle's infamous Flame Surfacing, but it is a departure. Herr van Hooydonk says the new language is more sophisticated, and for the 8 Series, sportier than the previous version from the 1990s. I'm not personally in love with the 8 Series concept, especially the hard front that looks as if it wants to bite you.

In regards to the oily bits, the rear-wheel-drive BMW roadster fitted with a soft top will allegedly start off with the base Z4 s20i version with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine delivering 180 horsepower. A beefier s30i equipped with the same engine is said to have somewhere in the region of 250 hp, while the flagship M40i will get a straight-six unit from the 340i dialed to about 320 hp. An optional Competition Package should up the power ante by 40 hp. With the exception of the entry-level model fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, the others are expected to receive an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
