There are lots of basic things on a car that you don't need any training to inspect. Repaired body panels and scuffs are easy to spot if you spend time looking, as are any interior imperfections. When looking under the hood, take the time to seek out any leaking seals, and listen for any strange sounds from the engine. If you have a floor jack or lift available, even better-it gives you the opportunity to wiggle things around and check for suspension wear, underbody rust, and all sorts of other things.
