One Week With: 2017 Jaguar XE 35t R-Sport

One Week With: 2017 Jaguar XE 35t R-Sport Back in 2014, following the car’s initial public debut, we billed the Jaguar XE as “The Most Important Car in Jaguar’s History.”Right off the bat, the XE is an easy car to like. It's a handsome car with a sharp, purposeful design that is best described as a shrunken-down, liposuctioned Jaguar XF. Park the two sedans side-by-side and you'll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Usually, we'd cry foul over such a blatant copy-paste job, but in this case, it's a job done right. We're big fans of the XF's clean design; the XE's smaller package and lighter pricetag are just icing.

(Mahwah, N.J.) – June 26, 2017 – Jaguar is introducing an all- new efficient and powerful 296HP version of the Ingenium four cylinder gasoline engine to the 18MY XE and XF sedans, as well as the F - PACE performance SUV models.

Confusingly badged 25t, the 2.0L gasoline engine shares a good deal with the F-Pace’s current diesel I-4. A low-friction, aluminum-intensive design carries over from the diesel, offering excellent heat retention properties and a low overall engine weight. The direct-injected engine also features Jaguar Continuously Variable Valve Lift, helping improve performance and efficiency in a variety of engine-load conditions. A single twin-scroll turbocharger minimizes lag, further enhancing performance. Jaguar also integrated the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head casting, a move that helps reduce warm-up times from a cold start, thus reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

The company estimates the F-Pace 25t will accelerate to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, aided by the 247 lb-ft of torque that report for duty at just 1,200 rpm. Jag doesn’t yet have fuel economy numbers available for the new gasoline engine, but we expect it to hit at least 28 mpg on the highway.

Notably, the mid-size Jaguar sedan adds a trio of safety systems to its available-features list. Bundled with the car’s optional surround-view camera are forward traffic detection, which is designed to assist drivers in low-forward-visibility conditions by alerting the driver if the XF’s front-mounted camera and corner-mounted radar sensors detect an object in the distance; and forward vehicle guidance, which uses the front camera and parking sensors to help drivers maneuver into or out of tight spaces.
