Food Starbucks Releases Gin Barrel-Aged Cold Brew
Starbucks Just Dropped Its Last New Beverages Of 2017

Starting today, it's offering a new line of limited edition drinks to help ring in the new year. This morning, Starbucks announced the Black and White Mocha Collection, which features three celebratory beverages.
Included in the new collection is the Black and White Mocha, the Black and White Hot Cocoa, and the Black and White Frappuccino. Each one is smooth, chocolatey, and decked out for the fancy occasion that is New Year's.
One of the secrets to Starbucks’ success—beyond being on pretty much every street corner around the globe—is a willingness to jump on any and every trend. From beverages (!) to food (hello, !) to tech ( , anyone?), Starbucks makes calculated forays into the concepts that intrigue customers. Their growing number of barrel-aged coffees is no exception: Barrel-aging has become extremely popular—if you haven’t had a barrel-aged beer, you’re not drinking enough beer—and last year, the ‘Bux decided to bring the idea to its cold brew with . Now, the coffee giant has just released another new cold brew made with beans aged in the barrel of an even trendier spirit: Gin.
PSA: Sparkling Coffee Is Trending (and It’s Even Better Than Seltzer)

Instead of choosing between your morning OJ and coffee, you can drink both at the same time.
Instead of choosing between your morning OJ and coffee, you can drink both at the same time. That’s because the beverage, aka coffee soda, typically combines fresh juice, coffee and carbonation—in adorable pop-top cans for the road.
Currently available exclusively at Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle, Gin Barrel-Aged Cold Brew is an amalgam of many popular drinks, served sparkling as a twist on a gin and tonic that starts with Gin Barrel-Aged Rwanda coffee concentrate, ice, and a few dashes of lime bitters before being finished with tonic and a garnish with lime. Though the results have notes of both gin and cold brew, the drink is far from as boozy as it sounds because the cold brew itself isn’t aged in gin barrels; instead, the coffee beans are barrel-aged before they’re even roasted.
“The beverage begins with unroasted small-lot Rwandan coffee beans hand-scooped into oak barrels that first held bourbon, then used to age gin by local craft distillery Big Gin in Seattle,” Starbucks. “Over several weeks, the beans are carefully hand-rotated in the barrel and absorb notes of pepper, cardamom and vanilla from the gin and barrel char. They are then small-batch roasted by Starbucks master roasters, a process which burns off the alcohol but retains the aroma and flavor from the barrel aging. The result is a lively coffee infused with a warm botanical essence that highlights its bright citrus notes and caramel finish.”
How 1 Woman Invented Coffee as We Know It Today
If you've ever wondered what genius invented the coffee filter as you sip a freshly brewed cup, allow this brief introduction to make you appreciate your daily dose of caffeine even more. Melitta Bentz, a German housewife, invented the coffee filter based on her desire for a smoother blend without the presence of grainy grinds or the bitterness caused by overbrewing. Melitta, who brewed coffee every day, wasn't pleased with the ineffective ceramic and metal filtering devices that were available, so she tried a softer, thinner material: a sheet of blotting paper from her son's school notebook.
Though Gin Barrel-Aged Cold Brew won’t give you a buzz unless you spike it with some hooch, Jennifer Galbraith, Starbucks manager of product development for R&D, suggests that the results aren’t any less enjoyable. “When you go to take your first sip, you’ll smell the quinine from the tonic and the botanicals from the gin and the coffee,” she said. “Then you taste the orange and lemon, finishing with caramel notes from the coffee and the barrel. It weaves together like a piece of fabric and leaves you with a light, refreshing flavor.”
Starbucks Reserve Gin Barrel-Aged Cold Brew will only be available for a limited time, and as of now, only at the one Seattle location, but if you can’t get to the main Roastery, that doesn’t mean you should give up hope entirely. After Starbucks introduced its Whiskey Barrel-Aged Cold Brew in March of last year, the drink found its way to the brand’s Starbucks Reserve coffee bars in a handful of major metropolitan areas across the country in September. The Gin Barrel-Aged Cold Brew is also available as whole-bean coffee which is significantly easier to ship than a mocktail.

I used to think I didn’t like asparagus, but it turned out to be—as these aversions often are—a textural problem. Their stalks would remain fibrous and tough even as half the stalk and the tips turned to mush. My mind was changed a few years ago when some restaurant dish I ordered came […]
