According to the Salvation Army, “National Donut Day” was created in 1938 and dates back to 1917 — amid World War I, during which the Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies served the baked goods to soldiers on the front lines.

Lt. Col. Ward Matthews, a spokesperson for the Salvation Army, explains:

“Armed with their faith and little more than a helmet, rolling pins and donut supplies, the Donut Lassies provided the soldiers a piece of home in the trenches of eastern France. The donut was and continues to be a symbol of the comfort and support that The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people in need each year.”

The following seven doughnut shop chains, for example, are among those that will hand out doughnuts for free on Friday, either with or without a purchase. A couple are also collecting donations for or donating proceeds to the Salvation Army.

We recommend that you call ahead to your nearest locations before running out the door to confirm they are participating in these offers. Several chains state that only “participating locations” will offer freebies.

1. Duck Donuts

Snag a free classic doughnut — including the bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar variety — with no purchase necessary.

You’ll also get a buy-one-get-one-free doughnut coupon that you can redeem before June 17.

Duck Donuts has locations in multiple states, primarily along the Eastern Seaboard.

Receive a free OC Sand doughnut. This is a specialty variety with a honey glaze and cinnamon sugar.

4. Honey Dew Donuts

Grab a free S’More doughnut with the purchase of any medium size or larger drink. This variety is described as “a soft donut ring topped with chocolate frosting, graham cookies and marshmallows.” It’s also the official doughnut of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.

Honey Dew Donuts is a New England-based chain with locations in three states.

5. Krispy Kreme

Select one free doughnut of your choice — any variety — with no purchase necessary.

Enjoy any nonspecialty doughnut — any doughnut with a hole in it — for free. No purchase is necessary, though you must print or display the “Golden Ticket” coupon to snag this freebie.

LaMar’s is also partnering with the Salvation Army by raising donations “to take a bite out of child hunger.”

7. Shipley Do-Nuts

Get a free glazed doughnut with any purchase from 5 a.m. to noon. Corporate stores in the Houston area will donate part of Friday’s sales to the Salvation Army of Greater Houston.

Shipley has locations in multiple states, primarily in and around Texas.
