When I first started loving and learning about cocktails, I spent hours absorbing every detail about cocktail making and drinking at the long maple bar in New York City's Pegu Club. I needed more. I met people who were willing to talk to me and teach me: cocktail illuminati like Audrey Saunders, owner of Pegu Club, and historian David Wondrich and former Rainbow Room guru Dale DeGroff. I picked up tips and learned that your cocktail universe can be turned with a few small, easy tweaks and insights. It might be a garnish you need to introduce to your next margarita, or a bottle of bitters to keep on hand. Nothing complicated. Here are 7 tips to get you started.

1. Grapefruit is an overlooked cocktail garnish. I like a twist with my martinis and a half-moon slice with my margaritas. It adds an alluring perfume without lemon’s acidity.

2. Why anyone would want a glass full of chilled gin or vodka is beyond me. Next time you order a martini, do me a favor and ask for a 50/50 cocktail. Half gin, half dry vermouth with a few dashes of bitters, and an olive (or three). If you don’t like it, I’m buying.

3. Everyone should have at least one cocktail recipe memorized. My first was a Negroni. One ounce each of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. Serve on the rocks and garnish with an orange twist. If you can’t remember that, you probably shouldn’t be drinking.

4. I like a Bloody Mary as much as the next line-waiting bruncher. But instead of vodka, I ask for gin, or better yet, aquavit, the Norwegian spirit with a distinct dill and caraway profile. It adds a bit of backbone to a rather busy drink.

5. And speaking of a Negroni, my preferred variation is the heavy-hitting Boulevardier, which subs bourbon for gin.

6. Say hello to my little friend. Underberg, the German anise-flavored digestif sold in 20-ml bottles wrapped in paper, is a bartender favorite. It’s my go-to for nights when I’ve had three dinners.
