Travel Airlines cancel flights as another winter storm nears
Flying on Thursday? Some airlines are letting you rebook flights without a fee
If the snowy weather ahead is disrupting your travel plans, you may not be entirely out of luck. Some airlines will be waiving cancellation and rebooking fees for passengers whose travel plans may be impacted by the near-blizzard conditions expected to hit the region on Thursday. Airlines taking part in the travel waivers include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and United Airlines, and they’re all offering roughly the same thing: Cancel your flight for a refund; or rebook your flight between the same cities for another date within a week, and you won’t face any fees.
- Another winter storm is expected to strike the northeast Monday evening.
- American said it is suspending all of its flights to and from Boston on Tuesday.
- Airlines will often cancel flights ahead of a storm to keep a lid on further disruptions.
American Airlines has canceled its entire Boston schedule for Tuesday as another powerful winter storm approaches the Northeast, threatening to dump more than a foot of snow in parts of the region.
The airline and the regional carriers that operate some of its routes will not fly to and from Boston because of the storm, American said Monday, warning of other possible flight cancellations around the Northeast. The airline had 89 departures to an equal number of arrivals scheduled from Boston's Logan International Airport on Tuesday, American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said.
How Cold Does It Have to Be to Keep a Plane From Flying?
With much of the country in the midst of a deep freeze, travelers may be wondering how cold it has to be for the severe weather to foil upcoming travel plans. But it isn't the cold that's a problem for most aircraft. After all, commercial airplanes can cruise at an altitude of nearly 40,000 feet, where temperatures hover around -70 degrees Fahrenheit. Jet fuel freezes at around -40 degrees Fahrenheit, but it will work just fine as long as it’s kept above that temperature on the ground.
Several airlines with large operations from Boston, including American, Delta and JetBlueJ, are waiving ticket-change fees for travelers affected by the storm. Southwest said passengers won't pay additional fees for a date change. The airline doesn't charge date-change fees but passengers generally have to pay more if the fare is higher on the new travel date.
Airlines will often cancel flights ahead of time to avoid stranding passengers and crews, which can lead to further delays if employees are not in place to work when flights resume.
About a fifth of flights scheduled for Tuesday are already canceled, according to flight-tracking company FlightAware.

American Airlines is the latest to add ‘basic economy’ fares to international flights .
The good news: flights to Europe on American Airlines might soon get a little cheaper! The bad news: that’s because American Airlines is following in the footsteps of other airlines by adding a tier known as “basic economy,” which lowers the price of airfare at the cost of some standard amenities many flyers are used to. Starting in April, American Airlines will offer basic economy fares on trans-Atlantic flights, including those operated by British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair. The biggest tradeoff for basic economy ticket holders is that they won’t get a seat assignment until they check in to their flight.
