So far, the Most Magical Place on Earth is open for business, though park officials are closely monitoring the situation. Disney World has only been closed four times since opening in 1971, all in anticipation of hurricanes. The most recent closure was due to Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which ended up weakening off the coast.

If your dream vacation is in jeopardy, fear not. As the Orlando Sentinel recently pointed out, Walt Disney World Resort policy allows people to reschedule or cancel their vacation packages and most room-only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any fees if a hurricane warning is issued by National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area or a visitor’s residence within seven days of the traveler’s scheduled arrival. This policy also applies to Disney's Vero Beach Resort and Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort in the event a hurricane warning is issued for those destinations. Unfortunately it does not apply to certain special events or dining experiences.

Hurricane Irma has caused a number of cancellations already at Walt Disney World , and park closures over the weekend are likely. Central Florida is expected to begin feeling tropical storm force winds Saturday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Being at Walt Disney World during Hurricane Irma was definitely a learning experience for us, and hopefully this is helpful for someone else in the It’s also used by those who don’t want to cancel vacations, and still want to head to Walt Disney World even when they could cancel and stay at home.

On Wednesday morning Disney Tourist Blog reported that “guests are currently being allowed to cancel their vacations and receive a full refund,” adding that the wait on hold could be 2-3 hours at this point.
