St. Martin (Dutch St. Maarten), the 37-square-mile Caribbean island divided between France and the Netherlands, is a popular destination for many American vacationers. The island is known for mixing European flair with white sand beaches and turquoise blue water.

Unfortunately, the island appears to have taken a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma. While the extent of the damage is only now becoming known, some of the island’s hotels that have been popular with Americans are sure to have been damaged in the storm.

Hurricane Irma: Will it affect your flight plans? Here are five resorts that were in the eye of the storm:

Belmont La Samanna is consistently ranked among the top 10 hotels in St. Martin. It offers two swimming pools, private beach cabanas, tennis courts and a spa. It has 83 rooms and suites and eight villas. The property says it is assessing the damage.

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort is an adults-only property located on the St. Maarten side in Maho Village. Guests can also use the facilities at its sister property Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino. According to its website, all employees and guests are unharmed but the property sustained enough damage to cause the cancellation of reservations for the remainder of the year.

The Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa in St. Maarten is a family-friendly property with an outdoor pool, casino and spa and five dining facilities. The hotel said via its website that there were no injuries reported at the hotel, though it now remains closed in the wake of Irma.

Hotel Riu Palace St. Martin is a beachfront property on the French side of the island. It has an infinity pool, a children's pool, four restaurants and bars. It did not immediately offer an update after Irma, but -- like most other businesses on the island -- it should be presumed closed indefinitely.

Divi Little Bay Beach Resort is an all-inclusive located on a private peninsula between two bays in St. Maarten. It has four restaurants and two beachside and poolside bars. It also has three freshwater pools and a kids' club. The hotel provided the following update via social media: "We are happy to confirm again that guests and staff are safe, with no serious injuries. Fortunately, there is electricity from the generator, as well as limited wifi service. At this time, the Resort will remain closed until we are able to fully assess the damage."
