Following the destruction of Hurricane Irma, the Florida Keys have closed to tourists indefinitely. The popular vacation spot was hit hard by the storm and its 130 mile per hour winds, and according to a statement posted on the Monroe County website Tuesday, the community is continuing to suffer in the aftermath.

"For most of the Florida Keys, there is no fuel, electricity, running water, or cell service. For many people, supplies are running low and anxiety is running high," reads the memo.

FEMA officials spoke with CNN, and confirmed that 25 percent of homes on the chain of islands were completely destroyed. An additional 65 percent suffered "major damage."

"Basically, every house in the Keys was impacted some way," FEMA Administrator Brock Long said. At this point, according to county officials, "the roads remain unsafe for travel due to debris, which includes boats, downed trees, downed power lines, sand and washed out roadway."

Some residents of the region were allowed to return to their homes on Tuesday, but for now tourists are being asked to stay home. Despite having an economy that relies on vacationers, "the Keys are not open for business."

The Florida Keys are back in business but far from back to normal .
FLORIDA KEYS -- Shortly after 5 p.m. last Tuesday, Kim Ackerman closed the gates to the pastel-painted Shell World, a kitschy Key Largo gift shop near the gateway to the Keys. She'd seen three customers that day. But nearby, a sign of hope gleamed in LED letters over the highway: "U.S. 1 Keys is open to Key West."Hurricane Irma interrupted the party in paradise, but only for a time. On Sunday – three weeks after the storm thrashed the chain of islands, killing 14 and causing tens of millions of dollars in damage -- the Keys officially reopened to tourists.
