LOUIS — The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday set a March execution date for Russell Bucklew, a convicted killer who narrowly escaped execution three years ago because of a rare medical condition that raised the possibility that the lethal drug could cause him to suffer. Bucklew, 49, is scheduled to die by injection March 20 for killing a man in 1996 during a violent crime spree.He was moments away from execution in May 2014 when the U.S. Supreme Court halted it and sent the case back to a lower federal court amid concerns about Bucklew's medical condition.

VERNON, Mo . (AP) — A judge has found sufficient evidence for a southwest Missouri man to stand trial in the death of a man whose beaten body was found in the Jones initially was charged with second-degree murder in the September 2016 death of his roommate , 49-year-old Timothy Goodman.

A man was ordered Tuesday to stand trial on a murder charge in the fatal stabbing of his 39-year-old roommate in their Pacific Beach apartment last year, then immediately entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Joplin Globe reports that Michael Jones was bound over for trial Monday on charges of first-degree murder and abandonment of corpse. Jones initially was charged with second-degree murder in the September 2016 death of his roommate, 49-year-old Timothy Goodman. But the charge was upgraded after Jones declined to enter a guilty plea.

During the preliminary hearing, a Missouri State Highway Patrol sergeant testified that Jones admitted driving Goodman to the park but claimed Goodman asked to be driven there after being beaten on a walk. Investigators believe Goodman was killed in the men's shared residence.

A retired priest was convicted on Thursday for the murder of a young woman who went to his Texas church for confession more than 50 years ago, according to local media reports. The Rev. John Feit, 85, had still to be sentenced, but faces up to life in prison for killing Irene Garza, a teacher and local beauty queen, in 1960.During Holy Week that year, Garza attended a church in McAllen, Texas where Feit had been visiting priest. Her body was found in a canal near the church a week later. She had been suffocated.
