Chicago began the year less violently than recent New Year's weekends, continuing a trend that saw shootings decline over the last half of 2017, according to data kept by the Tribune.

At least 26 people were shot over the three-day weekend, two of them fatally. A woman was found beaten to death in the Lincoln Park area, bringing the death toll to three.

The relatively quiet weekend comes after Chicago saw a roughly 16 percent decrease in homicides in 2017 compared with 2016, which was the deadliest year in two decades. The city reached 670 homicides last year, down from 792 in 2016, according to Tribune data.

There were no homicides in Chicago during the first two days of the weekend, then three on New Year's Day.

-Around 2:20 a.m. Monday, Janusz Kolodgziejczyk, 51, was shot while driving a Toyota Camry in the 3900 block of South Pulaski Road in the Avondale neighborhood, police said. He was hit in the back and his car veered into a fence. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:46 a.m. Kolodgziejczyk lived on the block where he was shot, police said.

-Around 11:20 a.m., Brenda Ramos, 29, was found in a basement apartment in the 2600 block of North Hampden Court in the Park West neighborhood on the North Side. Ramos was found with blunt trauma to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. She lived on the block where she was found.

-Around 5 p.m. Monday, a 34-year-old man was fatally shot in the 4700 block of South Princeton Avenue in the Fuller Park neighborhood, police said. John Harris was shot several times in the neck while behind the wheel of a car, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. He lived about five miles away, in the 7400 block of South Sangamon Street in the Englewood neighborhood.
