Transgender Runners Can Compete in the Boston Marathon as Their Self-Identified Gender, Organizers Affirm

Transgender Runners Can Compete in the Boston Marathon as Their Self-Identified Gender, Organizers Affirm The Boston Marathon has reiterated its policy that allows transgender runners to compete under their self-identified gender – amid renewed debate among runners. The Boston Athletic Association, which oversees the marathon, told NPR that organizers only ask that runners compete under the same gender identity they declared when they qualified for the marathon. That policy has been in place for “several years,” according to the statement given to NPR. The New York and Chicago marathons have similar policies, NPR reported. “We don’t require that runners outline their gender identity history with us, so we can’t say for certain how many trans runners are in our race. We do know that we have had several transgender runners in the past,” the Boston Athletic Association told NPR. However, runners are required to show a government-issued ID to get an official bib number and, BAA said “We do compare the ID with the person’s qualification-associated gender description.” The Boston Athletic Association told NPR it does not have a specific policy on how it would handle a runner whose gender identity is not the same as the one listed on the government ID. The BAA said it would try to resolve the issue with “a strong emphasis on inclusion.” The issue of transgender runners has become a topic of discussion in the marathon community following an article in Canadian Running magazine about three transgender women who will run the elite race as their identified gender.

NEW YORK — Inmates in New York City's jail system will be housed with fellow inmates of the gender they identify with, officials said Monday.

The announcement by Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio and the city commissioner of human rights means New York will join San Francisco in establishing a policy to accommodate transgender inmates.

"Respecting someone's gender identity or gender expression is key in making sure that everyone in New York City is living with dignity and respect," said Carmelyn Malalis, the commissioner of human rights. "The fact that somebody's incarcerated or not doesn't really change that."

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed nearly 900 new police officers at the ceremony as tensions with the NYPD mount over what they called his failure to support law enforcement. De Blasio signed an order in 2016 directing all city-owned schools, recreation centers and other buildings that have single-sex bathrooms and locker rooms to let people use the bathrooms of the gender they identify with.

The Department of Correction initially received a partial exemption from the order because of inmate safety concerns.

Under the new policy, the Department of Correction will house inmates consistent with their gender identity unless the outcome of a federally required safety assessment or the preferences of the inmate require alternative housing. A transgender housing unit is an option for some inmates.

The Department of Correction will have six months to implement the policy.

San Francisco officials announced in 2015 that it would house transgender inmates based on their gender identity.

Mississippi defendants spend months in jail awaiting trial .
Poverty, scarce resources, and a pattern of locking up people for low-level crimes all lead to very long jail stays for many defendants awaiting trial in Mississippi. A new recent survey provided exclusively to The Associated Press shows more than one-third of all of those jailed before trial have been held for 90 or more consecutive days. More than 600 have been in jail longer than a year. The most recent census conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2013, showed an average pretrial jail stay in Mississippi of 40 days, the sixth-longest in the country.
