The vigil, which will include ministers, town selectmen, and other local officials, is meant to reassure residents that the killings were “a targeted act of domestic violence” and not a random act, said Josh Degen, the chairman of the town’s selectmen.

A 22-year-old man, Orion Krause faces charges of four counts of murder, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan said Friday, calling it a “a tragic incident of family violence.”

Investigators said the four people were found dead in a home on Common Street Friday, but have not given a motive for the murders or released the names of victims, although Ryan said they include an elderly man and woman, along with two middle-aged women.

Family members of Bertha Mae Parker, 68, a caretaker for an elderly couple living in the home, said she was among those killed.

The vigil is planned to start at 4 p.m. on the town field behind the Groton Public Library, Degen said.

In a Facebook post, the Rev. Elea Kemler, the minister of First Parish Church of Groton, asked residents to come and to bring their neighbors.

“When violence and fear come, we need to gather as a community to see one another’s faces and share our light with one another,” she wrote.

Residents of Groton, a suburban community of less than 11,000 about 20 miles west of Lowell, have been alarmed since news of the killings spread, said Degen.

“It appears that no one where in this country is immune from this type of violence,” said Degen. “People have to develop a different mindset about respecting one another.”
