NEW ORLEANS, La. – A city police officer was shot and killed while on routine patrol early Friday morning, reports CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV.

It happened shortly after midnight, police say.

Several officers returned fire and the suspect was hit and brought to a hospital and arrested, authorities said. No other officers were wounded.

"Our officer has expired," said police Superintendent Michael Harrison. This hurts. I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts."

Drug peddler sentenced to death for killing cop . “DSP sahib was shot at least five times, while his guard was shot four times, leaving them dead on the spot,” explained Azizabad SHO According to SHO Ameer, the DSP was on routine patrol in the area when the militants targeted him and his driver.

A New Orleans police officer was shot dead Saturday inside his patrol car while transporting an arrested person. “That prisoner was able to get his hands out of the handcuffs and was able to get a firearm and shot Officer Holloway while he was driving,” said Police Chief Michael Harrison.

Harrison said four officers saw something happen at the scene while on routine patrol and got out and tried to make a stop when a suspect opened fire, striking the officer several times. There was only one gunman, he said.

 The officer's name hasn't been released.   

There was a large police presence in an apartment complex near where the shooting happened.

New Orleans Police, Louisiana State Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had investigators at the scene.
