Entertainment Joseph Wayne Miller dies: Salami Sam in ‘Heavy Weights' was 36

Joseph Wayne Miller, the former child actor whose sole notable role was as the splash-making “Salami” Sam in Disney’s Judd Apatow-penned 1995 fat camp comedy Heavy Weights, has died in Chicago. He was 36.

“When we made ‘Heavyweights’ being around Joe Miller was pure joy,” Judd Apatow, who co-wrote and produced the film, said in a statement Wednesday. “We could not have loved spending time with him more. He made everyone around him so happy. What a terrible loss.”

Miller is shown at far right in the cast photo above, next to Kenan Thompson.

“Rest in peace, buddy,” Heavy Weights co-star, actor Aaron Schwartz, posted on Instagram. “Salami Sam is my spirit animal.”

Only a few days after the university fired head football coach Rich Rodriguez following reports that the school had launched an investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct, a former Wildcats quartback defended Rodriguez by downplaying the allegations and claiming that Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller has been paying players. Matt Scott, who played at Arizona from 2008-2012, criticized the university for what he perceived as a hypocritical decision to fire Rodriguez but keep Miller.

A Pleasant Hill high school wrestler was paralyzed from the neck down by a spinal cord injury he suffered during a junior varsity match Wednesday, school officials said. Ryan Joseph, a 16-year-old sophomore at College Park High School, suffered an injury to his neck that left him unable to breathe on his own, school athletic director Jim Keck said. Ryan is being treated at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. Though visitors cannot see him at this time, Keck said that cards would be welcome.“He's one of the most positive kids, a joker, fantastic sense of humor,” Keck said. “He’s always trying to make other people smile.
