Summer league breakthrough for Harry Giles begs a what-if for 2017 Duke

Summer league breakthrough for Harry Giles begs a what-if for 2017 Duke Knee injuries derailed Giles' college career and rookie season. But that’s not why Mike Krzyzewski’s team was the overwhelming national title favorite to start that season. It was the addition of two top-five phenoms that really had expectations for Duke championship-or-bust. Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles (and we shouldn’t forget 11th-ranked Marques Bolden) were going to be the one-two punch to make Duke not only the best team in the country, but maybe a dominant one, one that we would be comparing teams to for a decade.

Watch: Astros Closer Ken Giles Punches Himself in Face in Loss to Yankees. Houston starter Justin Verlander pitched eight innings, striking out 14 while allowing three hits. After punching himself, Giles went into the dugout and threw a bat for good measure.

Ken Giles has gone from Houston Astros closer to minor leaguer.

The Astros optioned Giles to AAA Fresno on Wednesday, a day after being charged three earned runs and not recording an out against the Oakland Athletics.

Giles posted a 2.30 ERA last season and seemed like one of the best closers in the game. He collapsed during the postseason, though, and that has carried over into 2018, with his bad outing Wednesday raising his ERA to 4.99.

Gonzalez's go-ahead squeeze bunt helps Astros sweep White Sox

Gonzalez's go-ahead squeeze bunt helps Astros sweep White Sox The Astros beat the White Sox 2-1 on Sunday. The Astros sensed their scoring opportunities running out in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon. A pitchers' duel and a tie score encouraged Marwin Gonzalez to try something that he had not done successfully in his previous 732 major league games.

Astros closer Ken Giles delivered the 1–2 punch in a 4–0 loss to the Yankees in Houston on Tuesday. Just not the combo he wanted. Giles entered the ninth

Thanks to their madcap 7-6, 11-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night, the Astros evened the series at a game apiece despite another unsightly showing by their bullpen, with closer Ken Giles nearly fitted with goat horns.

One has to wonder if this outburst had anything to do with Giles’s demotion. The Astros are doing so well in so many departments, and they don’t need to put up with this sort of thing from a reliever who isn’t performing, even if it’s a high-profile one.

Are the NBA offseason fireworks over? .
We have that and more in Thursday’s NBA newsletter. You certainly wouldn’t call the 2018 NBA offseason boring: the best player in the world, LeBron James, changed teams in dramatic fashion a day after the Lakers lost out on a guy who announced a year ago he wanted to sign with the Lakers as a free agent. In response to all of that, the clear best team in the NBA, the Warriors, signed an All-Star to the mid-level just because they could.
