The Senate panel leaders reportedly met with Mueller in a secure room on Capitol Hill, according to CNN. Warner said last week that he and Burr had scheduled a meeting with Mueller .

Warner added on Thursday that he and Burr are also "in discussions" with Mueller about how to see former FBI Director James Comey's memos detailing his conversations with Trump.

The meeting with Mueller comes after the committee's closely-watched hearing with Comey, who was abruptly fired by President Trump in May. Comey said during his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee that he had handed over the memos to Mueller.

Warner and Burr have been asking for a meeting with Mueller since late last month. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein named Mueller, who is widely respected in Washington, as a special counsel for the probe that also includes potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

In addition to Mueller's investigation, the Senate Intelligence Committee and Senate Judiciary Committee are conducting their own investigations. They have stressed they want to sit down to hash out boundaries with the former FBI director to make sure they aren't interfering with his investigation.

In addition to meeting with Mueller, Burr separately told reporters on Thursday that the committee will hold closed-door meetings with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and NSA Director Mike Rogers.

"It will probably be next week," Burr told reporters, while noting the meetings hadn't been scheduled.

The two officials were part of an open hearing on Wednesday, but senators, including Burr, appeared frustrated by their inability to answer questions.
