Congressional leaders to meet with Trump next week

Congressional leaders to meet with Trump next week The meeting will come as lawmakers return to Capitol Hill from a month-long recess from Washington and face a daunting agenda in September . Congress must pass a government funding package by the end of September to prevent a federal government shutdown and raise the debt limit to prevent the nation from defaulting. Republicans may be preparing a short-term spending measure that would last three months and extend into December, according to a Democratic leadership aide. It could potentially include a down payment for the recovery effort following Hurricane Harvey that has ravaged parts of Texas.

Inside Trump's Deal with the Democrats

Inside Trump's Deal with the Democrats Trump sat in the Oval Office, listening to his Treasury Secretary oppose a plan to raise the debt ceiling. The president, in deal-making mode, had heard enough. As Mnuchin made his case, Trump cut in: He would side with Schumer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to make a 90-day deal to lift the debt ceiling.Five sources who received accounts of the exchange confirmed it to NBC News, with one person describing Mnuchin as seeming initially "wounded" and "surprised" by the president's action.

"The Pelosi- Schumer -Trump deal is bad," said GOP Sen. Ban Sasse in a statement following the announcement. In the photo , Schumer is insistently pointing at Trump, while the president appears to be smiling broadly. A Donald Trump - Chuck Schumer photo for the ages https

The end result of that meeting was Trump siding with Schumer -- and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi -- in agreeing to a three-month extension of the debt ceiling and funding for the government in exchange for the $8 billion in Harvey relief dollars the President had requested.

By any account, that deal was very good for Schumer/Pelosi and very bad for Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. (Ryan and McConnell were pushing for a longer debt-celing extension -- perhaps all the way until after the 2018 midterm elections.)

The photo captures all of that although -- full disclosure -- we don't know for certain that the pic was taken after the deal was reached.

But, let's assume it was. And let's break down the photo -- Jon Gruden telestrator style!

The Story Behind That Viral Photo of Donald Trump and Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office. A photograph going viral Wednesday shows Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer having an encounter with President Donald Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office.

We begin with Trump because, well, he's the president. A few observations:

1) He's grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

2) He's got his left arm on Schumer's right arm at the bicep -- a classic Trump power move.

3) Trump's right arm is at the Maginot Line between Schumer's shoulder and his neck. I think it's actually on Schumer's shoulder although the neck grab would be even more amazing -- a sort of "Hey, this guy...." move.

Now, for Schumer:

1) He's using his right index finger to point at Trump in what almost certainly is a sort of "you aren't going to regret this" moment.

2) His glasses -- which are familiar to anyone with a grandmother -- are epic.

3) I spent some time looking to see where Schumer's left arm is in the shot. I never did figure it out.

Also: The purple flowers framing the picture -- blurry in the foreground -- give the whole shot an arty feel. Which is a nice touch.

Before you ask: Yes, I spent an inordinate amount of time studying this picture. Don't judge me.

Schumer caught on hot mic saying Trump 'likes me' .
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) was caught on a hot mic Thursday saying President Trump "likes me" one day after Democratic leaders met with the president to reach a framework agreement on a deal to turn the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program into law. "He likes us. He likes me, anyway," Schumer was overheard saying to someone on the Senate floor.
