Nancy Pelosi Says Trump Promised Her He'd Sign The Dream Act

Nancy Pelosi Says Trump Promised Her He'd Sign The Dream Act House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that President Donald Trump told her on two occasions that he supports and would sign a bill to give legal status to young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. “We made it very clear in the course of the conversation that the priority was to pass the Dream Act,” she said at a press briefing. “Obviously it has to be bipartisan. The president supports that, he would sign it. But we have to get it passed.”Democrats are pushing for the bill, called the Dream Act, after Trump rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program earlier this week.

The top two Democrats on Capitol Hill will join President Donald Trump for dinner Wednesday night at the White House, the latest in a series of overtures Trump has made to Democrats in the last week.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are expected to discuss protections for young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children, stabilizing the health care markets and other legislative deadlines that will quickly creep up on Capitol Hill this fall, two people familiar with the plans told CNN.

One person familiar with the planning said the dinner was set up at Trump's request.

Schumer: I started considering Trump deal in August

Schumer: I started considering Trump deal in August Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in an interview published Saturday that he began planning his shocking debt ceiling deal with President Trump as far back as August. In an interview with the New York Times' "The New Washington" podcast, Schumer said he was thinking about his "leverage" with Trump back in August during a family vacation. "Even when I was on vacation with my family in August, I started looking," Schumer said in the interview."What's our leverage?" Schumer said he asked himself. "We only had one thing as leverage at that point, which was the debt ceiling."That leverage paid off.

Trump sided with Schumer and Nancy Pelosi last week on an agreement to extend the debt ceiling for three months. Maybe there could be a deal over a codification of DACA , with Trump again largely deferring to Schumer and Pelosi , or some creative infrastructure package.

Schumer and Pelosi both pushed for help for Dreamers Thursday in separate phone calls with Trump , initiated by the president. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is set to meet again Thursday night to talk about their strategy on DACA and is considering sending a letter to Democratic leaders outlining

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters confirmed the dinner plans.

The meeting comes a week after Trump agreed to a Democrat-crafted plan to push back the debt ceiling deadline for three months, siding with Schumer and Pelosi over the objections of his Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Republican congressional leaders .

The Trump administration last week also formally announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA -- a program that had protected nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children from deportation. But the President is looking to Congress to work on a legislative solution.

"I have a great heart for these folks we're talking about. A great love for them and people think in terms of children but they're really young adults. I have a love for these people and hopefully now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly," he said ahead of a meeting last week on tax reform.
