Thatcher refused to take panda to Washington in Concorde, papers show

Thatcher refused to take panda to Washington in Concorde, papers show Margaret Thatcher refused a request to fly a panda in the back of her Concorde when she visited Washington for her first summit with Ronald Reagan, according to papers released on Friday. The then prime minister was drawn into the scheme in January 1981, the same month that Reagan was inaugurated, when the Smithsonian Institution in Washington appealed to London Zoo for the loan of its male panda. The president of the London Zoological Society, Solly Zuckerman, seized on the opportunity to create a publicity stunt with the help of the prime minister.

The search for new and bigger prime numbers is conducted using software developed by the GIMPS team, called prime 95—it grinds away, day after day, until a new prime number is found . Explore further: University professor discovers largest prime number to date.

A Missouri professor, one of a team of nearly 100,000 volunteers, has found a highly unusual 17 million digit number -- and brought a prime -hunting project closer to a 0,000 prize.

An electrical engineer in Germantown, Tennessee, has been searching for big prime numbers for the last 14 years, as a volunteer who uses his computer to run a software designed to do exactly that. In late December, Jonathan Pace, 51, struck gold when his machine pumped out the largest known prime number yet.

What is this number? Well, since it clocks in at a humongous 23 million digits long, writing it down in its entirety, five digits to an inch, would require over 73 miles of space. And at the speed of five digits written every second, writing the number out would take 54 days, without any breaks. So no, that number itself won’t be written out in full here.

Ethiopia to release all political prisoners, close camp

Ethiopia to release all political prisoners, close camp In a surprise move, Ethiopia's leader announced plans to drop charges against political prisoners and close a notorious prison camp in what he called an effort to "widen the democratic space for all." Prime Minster Hailemariam Desalegn's comments came after anti-government protests engulfed much of the restive Oromia and Amhara regions in recent months, bringing many businesses, universities and transport networks to a standstill. The sometimes deadly protests, the most serious since the current government came to power in 1991, spread into other parts of the East African country, leading to a months-long state of emergency that has since been lifted.

The new prime number has been named. M74207281—in the press release, the team says. organization, that they have found the largest prime number ever—it is 274,207,281 – 1, it has over © 2016

Why You Should Be Excited About the New Record for the Largest Prime Number . But Riemann didn't prove the Prime Number Theorem, which places rigorous bounds on where large primes can be found .

However, it is the result you get if you multiply the number 2 by itself 77,232,917 times, and then subtract 1 from it. So that you don’t have to go through the process of verifying it for yourself, an online collaboration called Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) — whose software Pace was running — already did that.

The number was discovered Dec. 26, but GIMPS made the announcement Wednesday, having spent the intervening time running “four different programs on four different hardware configurations” to confirm proof of primality.

The newly discovered number has exactly 23,249,425 digits and is called M77232917, since it also belongs to a rare class of prime numbers called Mersenne primes. These numbers are always 1 short of a multiplication of 2s. For instance, the first Mersenne prime is 3 (2x2-1), the next is 7 (2x2x2-1), after that is 31 (2x2x2x2x2-1) and so on.

Powerball Jackpot Crosses $500 Million

Powerball Jackpot Crosses $500 Million The winning numbers were 2, 18, 37, 39 and 42, and the Powerball number was 12. The latest jackpot, which will be drawn Saturday, is the nation's 8th largest lottery prize ever. The odds of winning are one in 292.2 million. The cash prize would be almost $348 million.Despite no jackpot winners Wednesday, Powerball said more than 3 million players across the nation won more than $30 million in prizes. One Florida player matched the first five white balls, worth $1 million, while another player won $2 million with a Powerplay ticket. The largest Powerball jackpot was $1.

Earlier this week, BBC News reported an important mathematical finding , sharing the news under the headline “ Largest Known Prime Number Discovered in Missouri.” That phrasing makes it sound a bit like this new prime number —it’s 274,207,281-1, by the way—was found in the middle of some road

At more than 9 million digits long, the new prime number is the seventh largest prime ever found , and it just cut the six possible candidates for the elusive Sierpinski number down to five. Established by Polish mathematician Wacław Sierpiński in the 1960s

The new addition to the Mersenne primes is the 50th number of its kind to have been found, and it beat the previous largest known prime number, also a Mersenne prime, by 910,807 digits. That number was also found by the GIMPS collaboration, in January 2016. In terms of writing it down, the 49th Mersenne prime would be about 3 miles shorter than its successor.

Mersenne primes are named in honor of Marin Mersenne, a French friar who studied them almost four centuries ago.

For his efforts, Pace won a $3,000 GIMPS research discovery award. If you would like to have a chance of winning another such award in the future, you can volunteer with GIMPS by installing its free software on your computer and running it in the hope of finding the next Mersenne prime. The program can be downloaded using this link.

GIMPS hopes to win the $150,000 award, announced by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, for discovering the first prime number with over 100 million digits. There is also a $250,000 award for finding the first billion-digit prime number.

Really big prime numbers don’t have many practical uses yet, but cryptography algorithms based on prime numbers have been developed.
