Cam Newton injured his knee in playoff loss to Saints .

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the NFL's investigation into whether or not Carolina followed the concussion protocol when Newton was staggered by a hit late in the game will consider a knee injury as a factor, as well.

A league source told ESPN that the bothersome knee injury was a contributing factor as to why Newton staggered to the ground and struggled to stay balanced once he took a knee after a hard hit to the head. . . Newton underwent an MRI for the knee injury Monday, which came back negative. A source told ESPN that Newton would have been ready to play had the Panthers advanced to this weekend's NFC divisional playoff game.

While it's good that the knee issue sounds minor, it's just one more item to add to the long list of injuries Newton has suffered as the Panthers quarterback.

Payton’s gestures — with which he mocked the Vikings’ “Skol” chant —  to fans behind the Saints’ bench are believed to have occurred sometime after the Saints pulled ahead 24-23 with 25 seconds remaining.
