At 45, ski jumper Kasai set for record 8th Winter Games

At 45, ski jumper Kasai set for record 8th Winter Games At 45 years of age and competing in a record eighth Winter Games, Noriaki Kasai is hoping Pyeongchang becomes the venue for his biggest Olympic achievement. Kasai is one of six male ski jumpers representing Japan in Pyeongchang, where he'll surpass Russian luger Albert Demchenko's mark for the most appearances at the Winter Olympics. While Kasai has struggled this season on the World Cup circuit, he has a history of coming through on the Olympic stage.Few gave Kasai much of a chance of getting near the medals at Sochi in 2014, but he nailed two jumps in the large hill final to take the silver and finish just 1.

A scary moment took place at the Pyeongchang Olympics when an Austrian luger lost control of her sled and crashed during a run.

Birgit Platzer lost control in turn 9, and then slid into the wall, which resulted in her sled going sideways — sending her airborne. Her sled eventually hit the ice and landed shortly after, which resulted in her spinning around until she eventually slowed down.

The good news is that Platzer appeared to be OK afterward, and stated that she was “better than the sled.”

Russian appeal hearings end with no immediate decision

Russian appeal hearings end with no immediate decision Forty-five Russian athletes are still waiting to hear if they will be allowed to compete at the Pyeongchang Olympics after their appeal hearing ended Thursday without a decision. The first competitions of the games - including a U.S.-Russia curling match - had already started when the Court of Arbitration for Sport heard the cases at a luxury resort in the mountains near Pyeongchang. ''(A ruling is expected) within the next 24 hours,'' said Philippe Baertsch, a lawyer for the Russians. ''We are hopeful that the panel will follow our argumentation and respect the rights of the athletes.

Lugers can reach speeds up to 90 mph, so it’s always scary when crashes happen. We’re glad Platzer was able to walk away from the incident without suffering any serious injuries.

Alex Ovechkin takes shot at Gary Bettman over Olympics .
The landscape of Olympic hockey looks a lot different in PyeongChang than it looked four years ago, and that is largely because the NHL decided it will not allow its players to compete in the Winter Games. Ovechkin, who has spoken in the past about how important winning an Olympic medal would be to him, was asked on Tuesday if he has been watching the Olympics. He used the opportunity to take a shot at NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
