Anfernee “ Penny ” Hardaway could hardly be a more popular figure in Memphis, considering he grew up there, starred for the Memphis (then Memphis Oh, and CBS Sports’s Gary Parrish also reported, citing sources, that Hardaway was interested in adding legendary coach Larry Brown to his staff.

Kansas basketball was nearly given the death penalty in 1988. One of the most storied programs in college athletics was nearly shut down for one season. Three decades later, the man behind the egregious violations is still being courted for NCAA jobs.

New Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway has officially offered Larry Brown a full-time consultant position, reported The Commercial Appeal on Thursday. Brown, who reportedly wanted an assistant coaching job and, as a consultant, wouldn't be allowed to serve in a coaching role during practice and games, is considering the offer.

Panthers LB Davis suspended 4 games for PED use

Panthers LB Davis suspended 4 games for PED use Linebacker Thomas Davis of the Carolina Panthers announced Friday on Twitter that he has been suspended by the NFL for violating the league's policy for performance-enhancing drugs. The 35-year-old Thomas, who will have to sit out the first four games of the 2018 season, claimed it was an honest mistake."This is by far one of the saddest days of my NFL career," Thomas wrote. "I never thought that this would happen to me. I've worked extremely hard to do things the right way on and off the field. Panther Nation please know that I am not a cheater. "I was informed that I tested positive for a banned substance.

With Tubby Smith out at Memphis, hiring Penny Hardaway would likely be a costly mistake . (As this Hardaway scheme gathered steam, an idea was floated that he might bring onboard Hall of Famer Larry Brown as an assistant in charge of actual coaching.

Love him or hate him, the combination of Penny and Larry Brown brings, as one source put it, “instant credibility and phenomenal coaching chops” to the program. Oh, and that influx of talent would be pretty nice, too.

This must be a joke.

First, Memphis is offering a position to a man who has brought sanctions to -- three! -- programs. That alone should be a get-the-hell-out-of-my-office deal-breaker.

Second, they're offering Brown a coaching-restrictive job in which he can't actually coach. Never mind committing recruiting violations, Brown would break the rules simply by coaching student-athletes at practice and/or games.

This must be a joke.

Kansas was barred from defending their national title in 1989, placed on three years probation and prohibited from paying for on-campus recruiting visits for the entire 1988-89 season after the coaching staff used a "confidential informant" to recruit a player, among other things.

Eight years earlier, UCLA's 1980 Final Four appearance was vacated and the Bruins were placed on three years probation for using ineligible players during the 1979-80 season, the first of only two years with Brown as head coach.

Less than a week ago, Penny Hardaway was considering a return to the NBA. It just wouldn’t make sense for the Heat. However, I don’t fault him for trying to be a part of something special. Tuesday, March 20, 2018 The rumor is that Larry Brown will join the staff of Penny Hardaway , the new head coach at Memphis. This could be perfect for Brown , since Hardaway is not an established coach but has contacts with the best high school and AAU teams.

And in 2015 as Brown entered his fourth season as SMU head coach, the Mustangs were smacked by the NCAA with a pile of penalties for engaging in academic fraud and various forms of unethical conduct. Brown was suspended for nine games and SMU was docked nine scholarships over three years and barred from the 2016 postseason.

"I have nothing to be ashamed of in any of those cases," he said in 2015 of his past indiscretions.

Sure, Brown has won 73 percent of his games as a college head coach and has 2,000 NBA wins. He's the only coach with both an NCAA and NBA title and is in both the National Collegiate Hall of Fame and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

He's also the only coach who's brought significant NCAA sanctions to three different programs. Though there's no guarantee he'll do something stupid at Memphis -- but if he does, he won't be ashamed -- offering Brown a job is a huge mistake.
