Dabo Swinney indicates Clemson's quarterback battle may bleed into the season

Dabo Swinney indicates Clemson's quarterback battle may bleed into the season Kelly Bryant remains No. 1 for now, but he's getting a push from younger guys behind himIn fact, he's not sure the ongoing competition among Bryant, Hunter Johnson, Trevor Lawrence and Chase Brice will be settled by Week 1 against Furman. Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Swinney gave an update on where the quarterback battle stands heading into the long summer months. His answer was eyebrow-raising, to say the least.

There's not a whole lot to take away from most spring football games - the goal is to always make sure no one gets hurt. However, when it comes to the quarterback battles, they set the tone for the fall camps. Here's the deal with five of the biggest ones after the April 14 games.

Baker Mayfield says he’s being pressured to attend draft

Baker Mayfield says he’s being pressured to attend draft Former Oklahoma quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield made it clear in February that he won’t be attending the NFL draft. The NFL apparently isn’t taking “I won’t be attending” for an answer. Appearing on SiriusXM’s Basketball and Beyond with Coach K, Mayfield said he’s being pressured to show up. Here’s the full exchange on the issue of the draft, as distributed by SiriusXM. Q: “Will you be there for the draft?”Mayfield: “I will not. I will be at home in Austin, Texas, with my family and some former coaches.”Q: “That’s up to you, right?”Mayfield: “It is.

Clemson

Trevor Lawrence is going to be really, really good.

Flip a coin between Georgia's Justin Fields or Lawrence on who the bigger hot shot quarterback recruit was in this year's class, but on Saturday, Clemson's guy looked the part.

He's got the size, the stature, and the arm, showing off the ability to push the ball wherever he wants with a mature touch. He ended up completing 11-of-16 passes for 122 yards, but it was his brilliant scoring pass to Tee Higgins that will have everyone buzzing over the summer.

But don't push out Kelly Bryant just yet.

It wasn't the smoothest of games, and he never quite settled in. If it looked like he was pressing, and if you think he played like a quarterback who knows he needs to be brilliant to keep his gig, you're probably right. He hit 8-of-15 throws for 35 yards.

And then there's Hunter Johnson - destined to soon be the hottest prospect on the transfer circuit if he doesn't win the gig. He already stated that he has no interest in taking off like Zerrick Cooper did this offseason, but with his skills and talent - he was the hot get in last year's class - he's way too good to be sitting if Lawrence turns into the main man. Johnson completed 8-of-14 passes for 85 yards and ran for a score.

No matter what the more than 53,000 fans were there for, they got to see a guy who seemed to take hold of the quarterback gig going into the fall camp.

Deondre Francois is still trying to get over his knee injury suffered in the 2017 season-opener against Alabama, and his recent issues off the field - he was found by the police with marijuana - isn't helping his cause.

Bailey Hockman was okay. The 6-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman completed 11-of-22 passes for 203 yards and a score, He might have to fight to really and truly get in the mix for the starting job, but he was a good recruit last season - he's not going to go down without taking a big swing.

Francois and Hockman will be given every opportunity to be the No. 1 in fall camp, but James Blackman looked and played like a guy who got his feet wet last year as the fill-in starter, and is now ready to turn it loose.

Even though he didn't get to work with any receivers of note, he still completed 16-of-32 passes for 259 yards and a score. The 6-5, 176-pounder didn't take off and run, but he was decisive.

The big X factor - besides Francois' knee? Taggart is eventually going to want a quarterback who can take off and move, and that's not Blackman. But for now, he doesn't have a bad situation.

Miami

There's only one question to ask coming out of the Miami spring game. Did N'Kosi Perry do anything to knock Malik Rosier out of the starting spot?

The short answer? Nope.

Head coach Mark Richt won't come out and say it, but the quarterbacks are just okay. For Miami to be a true national title contender, one of them has to stand out, and it's not happening.

Rosier is Rosier. He's better than he gets credit for, and he led the team to the ACC Championship game and within a win of the College Football Playoff. But there's no wow factor. He's not going to lose the job; someone else has to grab it.

Perry isn't grabbing it.

The amazing Miami defense did its part to make life difficult for the quarterbacks in the spring game, but Perry still had a few nice moments. He completed 11-of-25 passes for 166 yards with a score and a pick, but for every good throw, he was off on two others.

The key to his world is his mobility, taking off for 45 yards. He has to be sharper, he has to be able to hit 60% of his passes with regularity, but if he can bring something terrific with his running skills, he's going to make this a fight.

A team spokesman said Mitchell had an MRI on Monday, and the team will provide a status update on Tuesday.Mitchell is one of the league's top rookies. Sporting News offers its picks for the Week 7 slate of college football games, which includes the Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas and a must-win matchup for USC vs. Utah. But Tigers quarterback Riley Ferguson already has 16 touchdowns this year to only five interceptions — and

Jarren Williams might be the future, but the new recruit is destined to redshirt. He didn't do anything wrong, and Richt will keep him in the hunt for the starting job if he's the best option in August, but Perry and Rosier would have to collapse for Williams to get the call.

Rosier held up better than the stats might show. He completed 9-of-14 throws for 105 yards, but again, the Hurricane D wasn't giving anyone a break.

For anyone who wanted to see if Austin Kendall could rise up and take over the starting quarterback gig, wait until fall camp.

It'll probably be warmer then.

The Sooner fans showed up in the cold and wind, and there were enough fun moments to make it a good day beyond the mediocre scrimmage. But nothing happened to clear up the quarterback race any further.

The other key to when the team kicks it back in late this summer? Kyler Murray's baseball career. It might be an issue.

While he has the upside to be a whale of a college quarterback, the 5-11, 190-pounder still needs a whole lot of work to be on the NFL radar. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but …

He can potentially make a whole lot of money playing baseball.

On the football side, he was good enough in the spring game to remain the presumptive starter - completing 11-of-21 passes for 85 yards and a score with 35 rushing yards - but that's assuming the baseball side doesn't become a problem. That's also assuming that he's able to hold off Kendall.

Kendall has been solid throughout the spring, and he closed it out in the bad conditions hitting 11-of-18 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. He's more than good enough to get the call against Florida Atlantic to start the season, but he's not what Murray could be.

If Murray is the guy, Oklahoma has a lightning fast all-around playmaker of a quarterback. The offense changes up a bit from the Baker Mayfield era, but it'll have a dual-threat total yardage machine under center.

However, some baseball team out there would very much like to make the kid a multi-millionaire.

USC

The final practice was all well and good - there wasn't a true spring game - but the starting quarterback for your 2018 USC Trojans wasn't out there slinging it around quite yet.

The program is in a holding pattern until star recruit JT Daniels shows up. And there are a whole lot of eggs being put in his basket.

Matt Fink and Jack Sears have been inconsistent throughout the spring. Like any new passers working the spring kinks out, there have moments where they looked the part, and moments when they just didn't have it at all, causing panic sirens to go off.

Offensive coordinator Tee Martin hasn't cranked them up quite yet, and the attack will work around the ground game early on in the post-Sam Darnold era, but …

JT, it's on you, son.

Fink was last year's backup, but he didn't get enough time to do anything to give him the upper hand this offseason. He can run a little bit and has good midrange accuracy, but Sears can push the ball a bit more.

The talent is there on the rest of the Trojan team to join Washington as the favorite to win the Pac-12, but this is USC. It's supposed to be in the national championship hunt. It's going to need a Darnold-level quarterback to emerge.

He's on his way …

Best Guess On Fall Depth Chart: 1) Daniels, 2) Fink, 3) Sears
