Animal rights groups slam bear use at Russian soccer match

Animal rights groups slam bear use at Russian soccer match Animal rights groups have condemned the use of a bear that performed before a Russian soccer match. The routine happened before a third-tier match Saturday in the city of Pyatigorsk. TV footage from the game showed the animal being led to the Mashuk-KMV Pyatigorsk club's stadium, clapping at spectators. The bear, named Tima, also held the ball before handing it over to the referee.

Mashuk-KMV went all out to entertain prior to a league match over the weekend, although the referee was rather nervous about his furry helper.

Russian side Mashuk-KMV caught the headlines at the weekend when they used a tamed bear to kick off their Professional Football League match.

Video footage taken at the stadium in Pyatigorsk shows the furry assistant handing the ball to the referee in front of a dumbstruck crowd.

The official, unsurprisingly rather nervous at the prospect of interacting with a potential killing machine, made a swift exit and left centre stage to the bear, who received a standing ovation after leading the applause.

The announcer at Pyatigorsk's Central Stadium joked that the bear, named Tima, would open matches at the upcoming World Cup.
