The story of how Jim McElwain became the wide receivers coach at Michigan isn't the most memorable one, primarily because he's not even sure how it happened.

"I don't know if (head coach Jim Harbaugh) got the wrong number and I answered," McElwain told reporters Monday, via Dan Murphy of ESPN. "No, I don't really know how it came about, but we got a phone call and I was obviously very excited to come and, if nothing else, get an opportunity to stand in the background and see how something is operated."

McElwain was hired to Harbaugh's staff in February following a two-plus-year stint as the head coach at Florida. He was fired by the Gators midway through the 2017 campaign, but produced two SEC titles in the two previous seasons.

McElwain's Florida team lost to Harbaugh's Michigan club to open the 2017 season.
