She has a cat named Agnes. When Atlanta Braves infielder Freddie Freeman steps up to the plate, he’ s under a lot of pressure to make his team proud. Along with some killer hand-eye coordination, he’ s definitely racked up his fair share of home runs over the years.

Wednesday was the 18th anniversary of her death.

Braves standout Freddie Freeman had a great game on Wednesday against the Mets. He hit a solo home run to help lift his team to a 2-0 victory over the struggling New York team. But it wasn’t just what he did on Wednesday that made it a special day, it was the specific day on which he did it.

Freeman lost his mother to skin cancer 18 years ago, so there’s a reason this home run felt particularly special when compared to the dozen others he’s hit so far this season. He said of the homer,

Samuel L. Jackson really wishes he'd been in Black Panther

Samuel L. Jackson really wishes he'd been in Black Panther Samuel L. Jackson wants to go to Wakanda as much as the rest of us! On Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Avengers: Infinity War actor stopped by for his 10th appearance on the talk show, which, in addition to his 70th birthday and once again passing Harrison Ford for the honor of highest grossing actor of all-time, led to Jackson being draped in sashes by DeGeneres. Once the celebration ended, he was prompted to discuss the blockbuster smash Black Panther and, more importantly, his lack of presence in the superhero movie. “It’s a great movie,” said DeGeneres, “but I couldn’t believe that you weren’t in it!” “I couldn’t either,” responded the star. “When they were making it, I kept saying, ‘So when do I go to Wakanda?’ And they were [shakes head].” He went on to point out that his Marvel character Nick Fury should totally have a presence in the flick, even asking the producers, “Can I just walk down the street in Wakanda so they know that I know it’s there? Because I know it’s there. I mean, Nick Fury knows every black thing that’s on the planet, so he’s gotta know about Wakanda.” Still there are no hard feelings from Jackson. “I wish I had been there, but I’m really, really, really pleased with the success of that film and how it worked out and eventually I may end up in Wakanda,” he said.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman feels great about the strength of his left wrist; strength he believes he lacked at the end of last season. Though he doesn’t regret coming back early after being hit by a pitch in May, Freeman experienced some frustration when his wrist fatigued during August

“On this anniversary of Dem’ s passing I just want to thank all of you especially you Barbara What a joyful presence she must have been, all the while carrying and apparently, practising some horrible habits. Anyway, I think you hit the nail on the head when you explained why Layne did what he did.

“I hit that really high. I know I hit it good, but I think she pulled that one over for me.”

He’s hit a home run on June 13th for each of the last three seasons, but it’s clear this one stood out over those others in the moment. Freeman noted that it’s a tough day for him each year, as can be expected, and he said he felt like this particular anniversary stood out as far as his performance on the field.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever done well on this day. It’s hard to keep my emotions in check. We lost her way too young.”

Losing a parent is awful, and there’s no perfect way to remember them or honor them on the anniversary of their passing. Freeman being able to feel her with him as he hit yet another home run on what is a sad date for him and his family is a lovely thing for him to be able to experience.
