Along with five fatalities, 17 people were also injured, said Ferry Budiharso, a spokesman for the Thousand Island police, the area where the boat was heading. The head of Jakarta's search and rescue agency, Hendra Sudirman, said that 98 people had been rescued. The boat, Zahro Express, caught fire shortly after leaving Muara Angke port in North Jakarta early on Sunday due to a short circuit on a power generator on the boat, Budiharso said.

Former NFL GM Jeff Diamond felt for Giants brass when he heard about the wide receiver boat party in Miami last week.

There was no shortage of amusing headlines after the Giants’ wild-card playoff loss to the Packers, courtesy of the pre-playoff excursion to Miami by Odell Beckham Jr. and his fellow New York receivers.

But I'll tell you who was not laughing: Giants owner John Mara, general manager Jerry Reese, coach Ben McAdoo, his staff and plenty of Giants players.

As a former NFL general manager and team president, I empathized with Giants brass when the story broke last week after the release of an Instagram photo featuring Beckham, Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis partying on a boat, along with other details about hitting the clubs in South Beach.

Eli Manning has funny comment about his teammates partying in Miami The subject of some New York Giants wide receivers partying in Miami after the team’s win over Washington on Sunday night was brought up Tuesday when the team had practice. Eli Manning, who was not a part of the festivities, had a funny comment about his teammates and even a self-deprecating joke. Here’s what Manning had to say about teammates Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis partying in Miami with Justin Bieber and Trey Songz.Eli Manning was "a little disappointed" in photos of his WRs on a boat in Miami. GM Street. An Odell Beckham Jr . news cycle can feel like a South Park town hall. Beckham is set to be a free agent after this season, and Giants co-owner John Mara was asked at the NFL owners meetings on Sunday about the chances of New York’s biggest star playing on another team next year.

Regardless of how the game turned out (bad) and how the players performed (poor), it was a terrible decision for them to travel to Miami on the Sunday/Monday before a playoff game. First and foremost, it set in motion the dreaded “D"word for sports teams — distraction.

Beckham and his boat mates can claim until they're big blue in the face that their trip had no effect, but that's simply untrue.

IYER: Why nobody's dropping boat party story

The immediate impact was last week's torrent of tabloid headlines in the nation's biggest market followed by constant questioning during the week. And when the end result was a loss, in which the players in question did not play well, it became the worst-case scenario. Beckham, Shepard, Cruz and Lewis now have no one to blame but themselves and their bad judgment.

Odell Beckham Jr. defends Miami trip: ‘I’m a grown man’

Odell Beckham Jr. defends Miami trip: ‘I’m a grown man’ Odell Beckham Jr. came forward to defend a trip to Miami along with a handful of his New York Giants teammates, saying there was nothing wrong with the off-day sojourn. Much of the criticism of Beckham and Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis centered on how the players arguably would have been better served preparing for next Sunday's Wild Card Weekend showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

The New York Giants and the NFL are aware of a potentially troubling video involving wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr . that was leaked Friday while he was on a Nike-sponsored trip in Europe.

Odell Beckham Jr . did not have a good game in the Giants ' loss to the Packers Sunday, but But—really?!?— partying with the Biebs is why the Giants were smoked 38-13 by the Beckham has trouble controlling his emotions and it sounds like he did something stupid after game out of frustration.

While some might say a hot Aaron Rodgers was destined to beat the Giants, the reality is Beckham and Shepard's drops of potential first-half touchdown passes (along with a key, early third-down drop by Beckham) prevented the Giants from opening up a large lead that may have been difficult for the Packers to overcome.

I also believe the Miami trip and resulting media circus put extra pressure on Beckham and his boat mates, as they badly wanted to play well to calm the storm. Instead, they probably were pressing, which could have contributed to the dropsies.

But the overriding question remains: Why open up a can of worms and give anyone a reason to question commitment and focus?

I'm sure Giants execs and coaches, along with player leaders such as Eli Manning, would have preferred the four players spend New Year's Day plusthe Monday after resting in New York and studying video of the Packers' defense. I highly doubt any of that went on in Miami.

At kickoff of the Giants-Packers game, it’s expected to be around the same 12 degrees. Warmups are anything but warm, yet Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and his friends don’t seem to mind.

MORE: Media abandons Beckham, ship of fools

I realize that, with the exception of the 30-year-old Cruz, we're talking about young guys in their low 20s who seemingly had time to recover from a night of little sleep and likely several alcoholic beverages. But an airplane is a prime spot to pick up cold and flu germs, so it's never a good idea to bring extra travel into play, especially during the week of a playoff game. And for Beckham, Shepard and Lewis, it was their first playoff game. Preparation should have been their priorities.

But, again, the simple creation of this mammoth distraction made it a bad call. Even if Beckham and Shepard had great games with no dropped balls, the players still would have come off as having a lack of focus and misplaced priorities. Beckham's sub-par game with only four catches on 11 targets for 28 yards was abysmal for a Pro Bowl receiver on the big stage of the playoffs.

And Cruz, as the veteran of the group, should be taking more heat since he should have been smart enough to talk the others out of making the trip. With his injury history and coming off a 39-catch season while scheduled to make over $7 million next season, he might have sealed his departure from the Giants.

He makes big plays, fires up his teammates and carries the offense with his remarkable talent. No one is doubting his ability to take over a game, but his character has been brought into question several times.

With a nice little assist from Joe Buck and Troy Aikman and their repeated references to New York’s favorite tabloid story, many NFL media members and fans spent Sunday evening and Monday morning making jokes about the Giants , Odell Beckham Jr . and boats .

Adam Schefter breaks down the consequences Odell Beckham Jr . will face after his touchdown celebration on Sunday. Quarterback Eli Manning said Tuesday that he didn't see the celebration and didn't know why the Giants were penalized.

The rookie Shepard, a second-round pick, will be given a chance to get his act together after a good rookie year (65 catches and eight touchdowns). As for the undrafted rookie Lewis, a roster bubble player who had seven catches this season, it definitely was not a wise move to get caught up in this mess.

During my career, I dealt with several incidents involving players who put themselves in bad situations on their days off during the season (and more often during the offseason) … but never on the week before a playoff game. Plus, things are much different today than they were when I worked in the league, with everyone now having cell phone cameras and immediate access to social media sites. It's very difficult for players to fly under the radar in their off-field activities, particularly for stars like Beckham.

When I met with our team every year at training camp, I would tell them they are living life in the fish bowl, with people watching their every move and ready to embarrass them if given the opportunity. I would quote Hall of Famer Tony Dungy, who said, "Never do anything to put yourself or the organization in a bad light."

My final statement would be, "Always act like a professional on and off the field."

Beckham at least realizes that the ill-conceived trip created a firestorm.

Troy Aikman: Giants partying in Miami 'poorly advised'

Troy Aikman: Giants partying in Miami 'poorly advised' Troy Aikman had some critical words for the New York Giants wide receivers who were seen partying on a boat in Miami after the team’s win over Washington last weekend. Early in the wild-card playoff game between the Giants and Green Bay Packers on Sunday, FOX made mention of the storyline that received plenty of attention early in the week.Aikman, who won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, said that you never want to give the impression to your teammates that you’re anything less than 100 percent focused on your games.

"I think it did a great job creating distractions for us," he said. " It's unfortunate. It did a great job of putting it in people's mind, 'OK, now if the Giants lose it's because you went to Miami.’”

MORE: Twitter had a yacht of fun with Giants

Beckham has been a lightning rod of controversy over the past couple seasons, with on-field fights, diva behavior and other antics, including allegedly punching a hole in the Lambeau Field wall after the playoff loss.

He’ll have to listen to criticism of his Miami trip and poor play against Packers loss until next season. It may even stick with him until he helps lead his team to a playoff victory.

Meanwhile, he'll need to do lots of fence mending with Giants brass, coaches and some of his teammates, as will the other three players.

Let's hope Beckham, being the great talent and exciting player he is, quickly matures and learns from his mistakes. He especially needs to understand there's plenty of time to travel and party after the season.

As it turns out, all he had to do was wait one week.
