A budding rivalry between Lonzo Ball and Markelle Fultz , however, is more than enough to get the juices flowing. Quick aside: there’s an undercurrent of analysts touting concepts like “it factor” when making their case for Ball over Fultz .

Lonzo Ball and Markelle Fultz , currently thought to be the top two picks for the 2017 NBA Draft, are already developing a rivalry . It’s a friendly one, the type of rivalry that makes sports even better. We’re all for it.

On Tuesday, it was Fultz’s turn to respond to Ball’s recent claim that he was the better player of the two.

“I have a lot of respect for him, and he’s supposed to say that. Anyone that’s your competitor is going to think that they’re better,” said Fultz, per ESPN. “To me, it was just funny, he just motivated me to work harder and be sure I put myself further and further in front.”

DeMarcus Cousins on Lonzo Ball: ‘Never heard of him’

DeMarcus Cousins on Lonzo Ball: ‘Never heard of him’ DeMarcus Cousins isn’t shy about throwing shade, and he threw a truck full of it in the direction of Lonzo Ball when asked about the soon-to-be NBA rookie. Cousins was asked by TMZ Sports for his thoughts on the best prospects coming out of March Madness. He listed off a few, including Malik Monk and any players coming out from Kentucky, his alma mater. But when he was asked about the former UCLA star guard he said he’s “never heard of him,” while adding, “His dad is a legend.”One has to believe Ball will get more than his fair share of verbal jabs when he does start playing against NBA stars.

UCLA’s Lonzo Ball and Washington’s Markelle Fultz are both potential No. 1 NBA draft picks this year. It appears that a friendly rivalry is already heating up after Lonzo ’s Ball ’s dad, LaVar Ball , and Lonzo himself have said that Markelle isn’t a winner and isn’t as good of a leader.

The first meeting between star freshmen point guards Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball , the potential top two picks in the 2017 NBA draft, ended up generating more excitement in the build up than during the game itself.

When pressed on if he expects his rivalry with Ball to continue in the NBA, Fultz replied, “He’s going to be [playing] my position, so … if he happens to be the point guard I’m going against, then yeah, I want to get him out the way.”

A rivalry seemed inevitable between Ball and Fultz, a pair of Pac-12 freshman point guards who seem likely to be the top two overall picks in this June’s NBA draft. Things went nuclear when Fultz appeared to shade Ball upon UCLA’s elimination from this year’s NCAA Tournament, and they don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
