"Just thought I'd switch it up," Ball added. "Wore them tonight. It's good when you can wear whatever you want."

If you're wondering what his father LaVar thought about this whole wearing Nikes over $495 Big Baller Brand sneakers - the very shoes Lonzo designed - he had this to say to ESPN:

"Lonzo is not forced to wear any brand and can play in any shoe he wants as long as it's OK with the NBA," LaVar Ball told ESPN by text early Thursday morning. "This is what being independent is all about."

Let's put on our tin foil hats for a second. First of all, of course the elder Ball would tell the media Lonzo's not "forced to wear any brand" even if he's mad that his kid didn't promote their BBB kicks.

It was clear that one of the final concerns the Los Angeles Lakers had about drafting Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft was his outspoken father, LaVar Ball . You can take him to another level.'"

LaVar Ball has since walked those comments back, saying that Lonzo ending up on the Lakers is something he wants to happen but that they won’t be trying to force his way there in the draft. However, it sounds like LaVar does really want his sons to end up wearing purple and gold

That's brand talk right there. What if Lonzo was wearing Nikes on purpose so we're talking about his shoes again? It would be a great conspiracy.

It's more likely that if Lonzo made the call on his own, LaVar has figured out a way to spin it, which is what great marketers do. And he's doing an incredible job given what we're talking about on Thursday morning.
