Report: Kirk Cousins wants to reunite with Kyle Shanahan

Report: Kirk Cousins wants to reunite with Kyle Shanahan Reports surfaced early in free agency this past March that Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins wanted to move on to the San Francisco 49ers and play for his former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Since then, a whole heck of a lot has happened around the NFL and with these two teams specifically. San Francisco went out there and added a veteran stopgap option in Brian Hoyer. Meanwhile, feelings of animosity between Cousins and the Redskins seemed to die down a tad.

Kirk Cousins is set to play under the franchise tag for a second consecutive season after he failed to agree to terms with Washington on a long-term contract extension.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the “tone” of the discussions between Cousins and Washington improved in recent months, but ultimately the two sides could not agree on an average annual salary.

Cousins will earn nearly $24 million guaranteed by playing under the franchise tag in 2017. He made $19 million playing under it last season, so he has no problem collecting a total of $43 million over two seasons and then hitting free agency. If he has another 4,000-plus yard passing season, Cousins will be setting himself up for a massive payday.

While one report indicated Cousins would be willing to discuss a deal with Washington next offseason, there’s growing sense of belief that a different NFL team is the favorite to sign him.

Kirk Cousins seemingly got very little accomplished in long-term contract extension talks with Washington this offseason, but that does not mean the quarterback believes 2017 will be his last year with the team. Cousins told 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday that he is “at peace” with playing another season under the franchise tag, but only having a one-year deal does not mean he plans on going anywhere.
