Same goes for DeAngelo Williams that same offseason. And Josh Norman's departure from Carolina last offseason wasn't pretty either.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager," Richardson said. "I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed."

As Richardson admitted, it's a surprising decision at this stage of the offseason, especially considering Gettleman built a roster that went to the Super Bowl in 2015.

The Carolina Panthers made a surprising move Monday, firing General Manager Dave Gettleman after four seasons and just nine days before the start of training camp. But other former Panther players who were cut during the Gettleman era weren't as easy on their former GM .

The Panthers did severely regress in 2016, finishing the season 6-10, but there were no signs that Gettleman's job was in danger.

The timing is even worse considering that Carolina's former assistant GM who was the likely in-house favorite to replace Gettleman, Brandon Beane, left to become the Buffalo Bills' GM in May.

Round 2 of Panthers-Marty Hurney is a little redemption, a lot of trust .
Yes, the Panthers bringing Marty Hurney back as interim GM is weird. But team owner Jerry Richardson trusts Hurney to make long-term decisions in a short-term role.Yes, Carolina bringing back its former general manager on an interim basis in the wake of firing Dave Gettleman is … unique, if not awkward. Hurney, who served as Panthers GM from 2002-12, will be making long-term decisions in a short-term position.
