After Dodgers' 1-15 stretch, is there a new team to beat in NL?

After Dodgers' 1-15 stretch, is there a new team to beat in NL? The Dodgers were recently on a 116-win pace. Now, they may not finish with the NL's best record. It was a coincidental pair of events, but it also crystallized the recent fortunes of both teams, and inspires a question unthinkable just days ago.

That has not diminished the levels of confidence in the clubhouse, though, as evidenced by closer Kenley Jansen , who made a rather bold pronunciation before the Dodgers ’ 5-3 win over the San Francisco I don’t care how good the Nationals are playing. We are still the best team in baseball .”

Sep 13, 2017 • 1 min read. So are these bold words coming from Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen or a simple statement of fact? You be the judge. I don't care how good the Nationals are playing. We are still the best team in baseball ."

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost 16 of their last 18 games, going from a potentially historically great team to one scrambling to defend their home field advantage in the postseason.

That has not diminished the levels of confidence in the clubhouse, though, as evidenced by closer Kenley Jansen, who made a rather bold pronunciation before the Dodgers’ 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.

“Everybody is going to go through a tough stretch,” Jansen said, via Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. “We are going through one right now, finally. It’s just part of baseball. What are you going to do, panic? Say we can’t play any more? No. We are going to get out of it. When we get out of it, everybody is going to have to watch out again.

Dodgers lose 11th straight, worst skid in L.A. team history

Dodgers lose 11th straight, worst skid in L.A. team history The National League-leading Dodgers lost their 11th straight game for the longest skid since the club moved to Los Angeles, finishing their 8-6 defeat to the San Francisco Giants at 2:10 a.m. local time Tuesday morning after a pair of rain and lightning delays late Monday. BOX SCORE: GIANTS 8, DODGERS 6Hunter Pence hit a go-ahead single in the sixth for San Francisco against Pedro Baez (3-5).Following a 42-minute delay ahead of first pitch, Curtis Granderson struck out against Chris Stratton, then the game immediately entered an even longer delay — this time for 2 hours, 52 minutes, before resuming at 10:50 p.m. local time.

Jansen has been one of the best closers in baseball over the last three seasons, and while his bridge is full of potential candidates, two appear to be leading the pack. July 12, 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers – The Dodgers ’ bullpen is solid, with Kenley Jansen still racking up strikeouts at an absurd rate.

“I don’t care how good the Indians are playing. I don’t care how good the Nationals are playing. We are still the best team in baseball.”

Record-wise, Jansen is actually correct. The Indians, however, have tied the MLB record for consecutive wins with 20 in a row, while the Nationals have closed to within 4.5 games of the Dodgers for the best record in baseball.

One of Jansen’s teammates offered a more brutal assessment of the club recently, but the confidence must remain in the Los Angeles clubhouse. They know how good they were and have to believe they can somehow get it back, but time is running out if they want it to happen before the playoffs start.

Forty-seven years ago, in separate incidents that took place exactly two months apart at two different National League stadiums - Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh -a fan was struck by a foul ball during a Major League Baseball game. In the first incident, 14-year-old Alan Fish got hit in the temple by a ball off the bat of Dodgers player Manny Mota. Fish died four days after the May 16, 1970 incident. Two months after Fish was struck, Evelyn Jones attended a Pirates game on the inaugural opening of Three Rivers Stadium.
