Five reasons why US Men's National Team will qualify for World Cup

Five reasons why US Men's National Team will qualify for World Cup Until the recent loss to Costa Rica, the USMNT had gone 9-0-5 since new manager Bruce Arena replaced Jurgen Klinsmann in November. The remaining games left for the Americans in their qualifiers should result in garnering enough points to advance beyond the group stage. They play an away match in Honduras on Sept. 5, are home again on Oct. 6 against Panama and finish in Trinidad and Tobago on Oct. 10. With the U.S. currently tied for third place with Honduras (and ahead of Los Castrachos based on goal differential), each match is critical.

If that wasn’t a wake-up call for the USMNT , U . S . soccer legend Alexi Lalas made sure he did his part Sunday in a blistering rant where he called out players one by one. One of those players included in the rant, of course, was Christian Pulisic .

Christian Pulisic ’s existence stands as a good refutation to my theories on the upside of a potential USMNT fall. Part of the Pulisic Experience, that newfound knowledge for U . S . soccer fans that a young American player has legitimate and undeniable world-class talent

The USMNT had a beyond disappointing showing in the latest slate of World Cup qualifiers, dropping a critical home match to Costa Rica and scoring a late goal to escape Honduras with a point. If that wasn't a wake-up call for the USMNT, U.S. soccer legend Alexi Lalas made sure he did his part Sunday in a blistering rant where he called out players one by one.

One of those players included in the rant, of course, was Christian Pulisic. In case you didn't know yet, Pulisic is the 18-year-old wonderteen who has dazzled fans both with the USMNT and against Champions League/Bundesliga competition with Borussia Dortmund. He's the only player in U.S. soccer history who has legitimate potential to become an international star against world-class competition, and he's only 18! And that's not a slight to Landon Donovan - Pulisic is the real deal. So predictably, Pulisic wasn't too concerned about Lalas after Dortmund's 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday's Champions League group stage.

Speaking to reporters, Pulisic laughed off criticism from Lalas. He said via NBC Sports:

"I heard about it. I am not going to lose sleep about what Alexi Lalas has to say about us. He can say what he wants," Pulisic laughed.

During the rant, Lalas said of Pulisic, calling him "wonder boy:"

"Oh, by the way, to all the guys that I didn't mention, it's because you don't even warrant a mention. That includes you too, wonder boy."

With two games remaining in the Hex, the USMNT is in decent position to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. It currently sits in fourth place, which would push the USMNT into an inter-confederation playoff to earn qualification. That was how Mexico qualified for the 2014 World Cup, for example. But with a home match against Panama and a road match against last-place Trinidad and Tobago on October's schedule, the USMNT could jump into the top 3 and lock up an automatic qualifying spot out of CONCACAF.

It will just take a much better effort than what we saw in September.

Kane scores 2 as Tottenham holds on to beat West Ham 3-2 .
Harry Kane scored twice as 10-man Tottenham held off a West Ham comeback Saturday to maintain its perfect away record with a 3-2 victory in the Premier League. Christian Eriksen appeared to have sealed victory just before the hour mark after Kane's first-half double had put Spurs in control. But headers from Javier Hernandez and Cheikhou Kouyate either side of Serge Aurier's dismissal ensured an uncomfortable finale for the visitors.Tottenham has now won its opening three away games for the first time since the 1991-1992 season.
