Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is not happy that, in his mind, Sunday’s referees used the video board to throw a flag on his team.

On Wednesday, Tomlin accused the referees of flagging cornerback William Gay for unnecessary roughness only after seeing a replay of the questionable hit on the video board after not taking any action upon seeing it live.

Tomlin made clear that he had no problem with the play being flagged, but that the process behind the penalty set a very troubling precedent.

“I’m a big player safety guy. I’m on the competition committee,” Tomlin said, via Joe Rutter of the Tribune-Review. “Very rarely are you going to hear arguments from me regarding calls relative to that, provided they are done in real time. I thought they called it off the JumboTron, and I won’t accept that.”

Michael Bennett's attorney accuses LVPD of 'smear campaign'

Michael Bennett's attorney accuses LVPD of 'smear campaign' Michael Bennett's attorney believes the Las Vegas Police Department is trying to "smear" the name of the Seattle Seahawks defensive end. Bennett revealed Wednesday that he was detained by police Aug. 26 and believes he was assaulted and racially profiled. The police department has since defended their actions and asked the NFL to investigate Bennett's statements.Oakland civil rights attorney John Burris responded Friday by calling for an independent agency to investigate the matter.

The NFL agrees: Officials can't use the stadium video board to help them do their jobs. The Steelers were penalized 13 times for 144 yards in Sunday's 21-18 win over the Browns. And while coach Mike Tomlin was generally displeased with all the flags, he was apoplectic about one call in

Players didn't hesitate to accuse Tomlin of wrong doing. “He did it on purpose,” wide receiver Torrey Smith said. Last week, refs flagged a New York Jets coach for getting in the way of a referee on the sideline. The Steelers coach looked up at the video boards and smiled.

There have been instances in the past where referees have been suspected of getting outside help on penalty flags, which is explicitly against the rules, as this would be as well. If it did indeed happen this way, Tomlin has a right to be concerned.
