Watch Rory McIlroy absolutely manhandle one of the most iconic holes in golf Nick Faldo once said that it's only a great shot if you make the putt. By that standard, this was not a great shot. But it's still pretty amazing.Coming into the 18th hole of the Old Course at St. Andrews during his first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship a disappointing two over, Rory aimed left of the driveable 350 yard and hit a fade - he was worried a straight drive would go long. Turned out his course management was spot-on, because his drive left him with a short eagle putt.He missed that putt, unfortunately, but his subsequent birdie salvaged and otherwise disappointing performance.

In 2016, McIlroy donated ,142,906 (by today’s exchange rate) to his foundation, including the entirety of his winnings from his victory at the Irish Open. More Golf. Recent. Rory McIlroy donated a staggering amount of money to charity last year .

Rory, whose foundation's mission is to "support children's charities big and small around the world," is an increasingly active philanthropist. I spoke with him about it at Yankees Stadium for a charity event back in August, where he described the lessons he learned from a 14 year-old cancer survivor:

"I've spent a lot of time with kids in similar positions and I always learn the values of perseverance, believing, fighting, staying positive. It's inspiring to see someone come through a battle like that and be as successful as she has been since, it's incredible. Even for someone like me, who's been able to be successful with what I've done, to see someone come through a battle like that, it's 100 times harder than anything I've had to experience in my life."

And now, the Irish Times found something rather cool after sifting through the most recent financial accounts for Rory's foundation.

In 2016, McIlroy donated $1,142,906 (by today's exchange rate) to his foundation, including the entirety of his winnings from his victory at the Irish Open. His foundation, in turn, donated a total of $1.5 million to a variety of charities in the UK and Ireland.

Speaking about it after the Irish Open:

"It all just sort of hit me. I had a little bit of time on the green when Russell and Danny were finishing out, and I was trying to hold back the tears then. You know, golf-wise this week, it's obviously very important to me but the work that we've put into this tournament and the work that we've put into the foundation, and the people that we are going help from this week. I mean, we've already raised over half a million Euros going into today for the three chosen charities, and then all the winnings go towards that, as well, so we've broken the million Euro mark this week, which is absolutely incredible. I don't usually get emotional about golf or about wins, but this one, it means just a little bit more, because it's not just for myself. It's for a lot of other people. Yeah, it's a day I'll not forget for awhile."

Rory's personal donation accounts for almost half of all his on-course winnings from the European Tour that year (though he also collected about $15 million in PGA Tour money in 2016) and the bulk of his foundation's giving in 2016.

In any case, it's a heart-warming act of philanthropy. Bravo, Rory!
