  Rep. Steve Scalise re-admitted to intensive care unit Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center have downgraded the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., from "fair" to "serious" because he has contracted an infection, the hospital announced Wednesday. Scalise "has been readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center due to new concerns for infection," the hospital said in a statement. "His condition is listed as serious. We will provide another update tomorrow, July 6."SCALISE CRITICAL, SHOOTER ID'D AS JAMES HODGKINSONDoctors had anticipated an infection related to the June shooting incident.

CHEASPEAKE, Va. — Fire officials say three people have died after a fire at a senior living complex in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The fire happened early Saturday morning at Chesapeake Crossing Senior Community Apartments.

  Calif. firefighters battle blazes amid sweltering heat California firefighters battled several blazes across the state Saturday as sweltering temperatures neared record levels in some spots. Significant wildfires raged east of the central city of Santa Maria as well as hundreds of miles away near Oroville, north of the state capital of Sacramento. The fires, including five covering at least 100 acres, came as temperatures rose past 100 degrees in some areas, prompting the National Weather Service to place parts of the state under excessive heat warnings. California firefighters battled several blazes across the state Saturday as sweltering temperatures neared record levels in some spots.

The Chesapeake Fire Department says six people - including two firefighters - were taken to the hospital with various injuries.

Three of five buildings in the complex caught fire.

Firefighters arrived at 4:41 a.m. to find flames through the roofs of three buildings. Crews from Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk and Mayock, North Carolina, responded to the fire.

Much of the roofing and upper walls of the buildings collapsed. Smoke could still be seen over the complex Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A police officer fatally shot a woman after she shot and wounded her husband at the scene of a car crash, authorities in Virginia said Tuesday.Virginia State Police said that 25-year-old India N. Nelson had been in a domestic dispute with her husband on Monday in Norfolk. At about 7 p.m. that evening, she and her husband were driving separate cars when they crashed into each other near a gate at Norfolk Naval Station.After Norfolk police responded and began to investigate, state police said Nelson shot her husband. Authorities said a Norfolk police officer then "engaged the woman and returned fire."Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.
