  Top general: US did not notify Russia on Syria targets <p>The United States used its de-confliction phone line with Russia prior to Friday's airstrikes in Syria, but did not tell the Russians what the United States was targeting, the U.S. military's top general said Friday night.</p>"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved, and we used our normal de-confliction channels -- those were active this week -- to work through the airspace issues and so forth," Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford said at a Pentagon briefing. "We did not do any coordination with the Russians on the strikes, nor did we pre-notify them.

According to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Iraq 's air force on Friday carried out its first airstrikes on Islamic State targets inside Syria . The move comes just one day after Iraqi troops seized the Mosul airport from ISIS.

F-16 warplanes crossed into Syria to carry out the strikes after coordination with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

The prime minister declared final victory over the ultra hardline group in December but it still poses a threat from pockets along the border with Syria and has continued to carry out ambushes, assassinations and bombings across Iraq.

Iraq currently has good relations with Iran and Russia, Assad's main backers in the seven-year Syrian civil war, while also enjoying strong support from the U.S.-led coalition.

Syrian regime forces on Friday advanced against Islamic State group jihadists in the south of Damascus, state media said, after more than a week of bombardment on the area.
