MOSCOW — Saudi King Salman has arrived in Moscow on the first-ever visit by a Saudi monarch to Russia.

As part of the four-day trip that began Wednesday, the king is to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks expected to focus on the global oil market and the Syrian crisis.

Ties between the two countries often have been strained in the past. The war in Syria, in which Russia has staunchly backed Syrian President Bashar Assad while Saudi Arabia has supported his foes, has fueled tensions.

Relations have begun to improve in recent years. A thaw between Moscow and Riyadh helped reach November's deal in which OPEC and 10 other oil-producing countries, including Russia, agreed to cut their production in a bid to combat a supply glut.

Russia may demand U.S. cut diplomatic staff in Russia to 300 or below: RIA .
Russia's Foreign Ministry does not rule out ordering the United States to cut its diplomatic staff in Russia to 300 people or below, the RIA news agency cited Georgy Borisenko, the head of the ministry's North America Department, as saying on Wednesday. In July, Moscow ordered the United States to cut the number of its diplomatic and technical staff working in Russia by around 60 percent, to 455, part of a diplomatic row.The figure of 455 was meant to mirror the total number of Russian diplomats working in the United States, but also included Russian nationals working at the United Nations in New York, Borisenko told the agency.
